The singer spoke out about her hopes that the upcoming live-action film will make "little black and brown girls feel represented".
Halle Bailey is enjoying a sweet interaction at Disney World with a "Little Mermaid superfan".
The 22-year old singer, who will play Ariel in the live-action film "Little Mermaid", took to Instagram to share a series photos and videos from her trip to Florida. She also shared a sweet interaction with a little girl who clearly was excited about the film.
Bailey captioned the video, "Met this beautiful baby Mila rose who made me cry," "She hugged me so tightly."
The Chloe-x Halle singer exclaimed, "You're so beautiful," as a camera reveals that Ariel was the girl’s "favorite". Halle replied, "Really? Halle replied, "Really? Mila?"
After that, she got the tot smiling for the camera and took a picture together.
Bailey, who stepped into Ariel's fins during the live-action adaptation of Ariel, has been the subject of racist hate. However, her family and Bailey know how important it was for a Black woman in the role. In August, Bailey spoke out to Variety about how her grandparents inspired her despite the backlash.
Bailey shared that Bailey said, "It was an inspirational and beautiful thing to listen to their words of encouragement telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this has done for us, our community, and for all the little Black or brown girls who will see themselves in you.
Disney's newest Mermaid actually noted that she might have felt more comfortable in her skin if her younger self had seen Ariel the animated version as a person with color.
The "Grownish” star said, "What that would've done for me, and how that would've changed my confidence, my believe in myself, everything." "Things that seem small to others, are so huge to us."
Halle, who was a huge fan of the Disney classic as a child, said she hopes that others will see herself in her when she appears on the big screen.
She exclaimed, "I want the little girl inside me and all the little girls like me to know that they are special and that they should be a princess." There's no reason they shouldn't. This reassurance was exactly what I needed."
The film will be in theaters on May 26, 2023.
