The BRIT Awards, which had discarded gendered categories last season, drew controversy this year with an all-male nominee for Artist of the Year.

Harry Styles was a big winner at the BRIT Awards this weekend. Following his Grammys win last weekend, the former One Direction member won four gongs.

Styles won all four BRIT Awards for which they were nominated (Pop/R&B Artist, Song of The Year, Artist Of The Year, and Mastercard Album. Two of the six Grammy nominations he received were for Best Pop Vocal Album or Album of the Year.

His album "Harry's House", which won Album of the Year at the Grammys was controversial. He also said, "This doesn't happen very often to people like me." This statement was made by a white male singer, who has long dominated this category.

Variety reported that he stated at the BRIT Awards, "I'm very conscious of my privilege up there tonight," He then acknowledged the controversy surrounding the Artist of the Year, an all-male shortlist. "So this is Rina [Sawayama], Charli[XCX], Florence[+ the Machine], Mabel, and Becky [Hill].

The BRIT Awards eliminated gendered categories last year. However, it did not result in gender parity in any of the biggest categories.

There were also female winners in other categories, such as the British-indie duo Wet Leg (Best new artist and British group), Becky Hill and Beyonce (Best international song and International artist of the year), and girl group Flo.

Styles took the time to recognize his roots and thanked those who helped him get started, including his mother.

He said, "I want to say thank you to my mum for signing up for X Factor without me knowing." "So without you, I wouldn't be where I am today."

He thanked "Niall [Horan], Louis[Tomlinson], Liam[Payne], and Zayn[Malik] for being here. Without you, I wouldn't have been here." Styles was paired with One Direction on the reality show in 2010.

They became one of the most successful boy bands in history, dominating the world before taking a break in 2015. The five remaining members went on to pursue successful solo careers.

The 1975 won the Best Rock/Alternative Act, David Guetta was named Producer of the Year and Kid Harpoon was named Songwriter of the year at the 2023 BRIT Awards.
