Winkler remembered, "I was typecast for eight or nine years because I was The Fonz."
Henry Winkler opens up about his miserable days as an actor who struggled to make ends meet.
The 77-year old "Barry" star opened up about his struggles after the end of the hit sitcom, "Happy Days", in 1984.
He acknowledged that his typecasting as a greaser was due to the fact that he spent over a decade on television portraying Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli, or as he is affectionately called "The Fonz".
Winkler admitted that he was "typecast" for eight to nine years.
His mental health spiraled after he struggled to find a job.
He said: "I felt a debilitating psychic pain because I did not know what to do." "I didn’t know how to get it. I didn’t know what to do. I had a dog. I had a family. I had a dog. Oh. My. God."
Winkler, who played the iconic character of "Arrested development" in the hit show, said that he had no regrets after the series ended.
He continued, "I enjoyed playing The Fonz." "I love them. I enjoyed learning to play softball. I enjoyed traveling around the world with the cast. "I would not trade it."
He added, "I don't think I would have gotten to this point if I had not gone through all the struggles."
Winkler acknowledged that it was not always easy for him to be authentic. He has since landed many wonderful roles, most recently in HBO's Barry.
He explained, "I have opened so many door." I've found paddles for canoes. I found scuba gear. I found unread books. "I never knew that authenticity existed for so long."
He said that authenticity was the "key" to life.
He said, "Don't be so worried."
