With the highly anticipated films "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Top Gun: Maverick, and "Avatar: The Way of Water," moviegoers made a comeback to the theaters. These films were box office successes, but there was competition for the critics. You may not be familiar with some of these films, but critics decided which were the best films in 2022. Rotten Tomatoes gathered the top films of the year, from animated films like Jujutsu Kaisen 0 the Movie to films in foreign languages like "No Bears."

"No Bears"

The film festival favourite "No Bears", a film by Jafar Panahi, an imprisoned Iranian filmmaker, debuted in September to great reviews from critics. Jafar is an alternate version himself who acts as a remote director for a movie being shot in Turkey, while he remains in an isolated village in Iran. The film, which is in Persian language, follows two love stories. It shows how relationships can be stifled by unavoidable obstacles. It also challenges viewers to look at the multilayered story of a man who has been oppressed by his country.

"Marcel the Shell With Shoes On"

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99%

Based on the popular series, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a story about Marcel, a one-inch tall shell who lives alone in the small world he and his grandmother have created within their home. A filmmaker discovers them and moves in. He begins to document their lives, discovering that they once belonged to a vibrant shell community. Marcel, who has become an internet sensation, uses his fame to try and find his long-lost family.

"Girl Picture"

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99%

Finnish queer film "Girl Picture", which is about misfit friends Mimmi (and Ronkko) as they transition to adulthood, follows their journey. While Ronkko is caught up in the teens party scene, looking for love of her own kind, Mimmi falls in love with Emma, an ice skater.

"Happening"

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99%

Based on Annie Ernaux's semi-autobiographical novel, "Happening" transports viewers back to France in 1963. Anne sees a bright future, but she is devastated when she becomes pregnant. Anne considers all options and decides to make her own decision, even though it could mean she faces prison.

"Till"

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98%

"Till" is a film about the 1955 brutal murder of Emmett Till, 14 years old. It also tells the story of Mamie Till Mobley, Till's mother. The film is about her quest for justice for her son and how she turned her grief into activism and the ability to change the world.

"The Quiet Girl

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98%

The Irish film "The Quiet Girl" is set in rural Ireland in early 1980s. Cait, nine years old, is sent away by her neglectful parents to live with distant relatives. She is quiet and reserved under the care of her foster family. The young girl blossoms after spending summer days in the country and learns a new way to live.

"To Leslie"

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98%

A single mother, Leslie, wins $100,000 in the lottery to provide a better future for her son. However, just a few short years later, the lottery has run out and Leslie is forced to live a difficult life. When she returns to her friends, she discovers that she is not welcome by those who have hurt her. Leslie feels helpless, until Sweeney, a motel clerk, takes a chance and helps her face her past while creating a better life for her family.

Jujutsu Kaisen Zero: The Movie

"Jujutsu Kaisen 0": The Movie is a prequel to the series "Jujutsu Kaisen", a Japanese manga series that was hugely popular. It introduces the world of Jujutsu sorcerers through a series. Yuta Okkotsu is a teenage girl haunted and cursed by Rika's spirit. Rika died in an accident as a child. Her spirit turns into a curse, and she haunts Yuta Okkotsu. He is left unable to control his pain and desperate for freedom.

"Lunana, A Yak in The Classroom"

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98%

The story of Ugyen in Bhutanese film "Lunana : A Yak in the Classroom" is about a man who dreams of becoming a singer in Australia, but is currently studying to become a teacher in Bhutan. He is tempted to leave when he is sent to a remote school, but he quickly realizes the importance of his job.
