After a fatal motorcycle crash in Vermont on Monday night, co-stars and friends paid tribute to Treat Williams' life and legacy.
Treat Williams, a prolific actor in stage, film, and television, died Monday afternoon after a motorcycle crash. He was 71.
Barry McPherson told people that Williams was "making a left turn or right when a car cut off". "I am just devastated. He was the sweetest guy. "He was so talented." Pam Van Sant and his two children Gill and Ellie survive him.
The fire chief of Dorset, VT where the accident happened, told the outlet the other driver had not seen Williams prior to the accident. Williams was airlifted to a hospital nearby by the hospital. Williams was the only person injured in the accident.
Williams' family released a statement to Deadline in which they said, "It was with great sadness that I reported that our beloved Treat Williams passed away this evening after a fatal motorbike accident. We are, as you can imagine at this time, shocked and deeply bereaved.
The statement said that Treat was "full of love for his wife, his children, his career, and his craft" and was at the top his game. It's all very shocking, but know that Treat is deeply loved and respected both by his family and those who knew him.
The family's message concluded, "We are devastated and ask you to respect our privacy while we deal with our grief." Please know that Treat appreciates all of his fans and continue to keep him on your heart and in your prayers.
Williams began his career on stage as Danny Zuko in the original Broadway cast "Grease". Williams began his film career with "Deadly Hero" in 1975. He has since amassed more than 125 credits for film and TV, as well as dipping into theater from time to time.
His first Golden Globe nomination was for his performance in "Hair" in 1979. He followed that up with another in 1981, "Prince of the City." He is also well-known for his diverse roles in "1941,""Once Upon a Time in America,""Smooth Talk,"", "The Phantom", "The Deep End of the Ocean", "127 Hours", and "Second Act."
His most popular roles are probably his many television appearances. He played the lead in four seasons of The WB's "Everwood", and more recently, he was the lead actor for six seasons on "Chesapeake Shores", a Hallmark Channel series.
He played recurring roles in "Chicago Fire," Blue Bloods," and White Collar, as well as notable performances on a variety of shows such as "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," Hawaii Five-0," The Simpsons," Leverage," Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Brothers & Sisters," Tales from the Crypt," or even "Batman: The Animated Series."
Gregory Smith, the actor who played his son in "Everwood," described him as a "wonderful person and a brilliant actress" in a statement sent to People. "Above everything, he loved and cared for his family." I am grateful that I was able to be a part of his extended television family. He left a lasting impression on me in my formative years. I will cherish my time spent with Treat, and remember fondly his stories, laughter and passion for adventure. Pam, Gil, and Elinor, I send my love to his family. "He will be missed."
Sarah Drew, their co-star, echoed Smith in her grief. She told the outlet: "I am utterly devastated by the tragic death of Treat William." I learned a lot from my experience on Everwood. During our time in Salt Lake City, we had a close-knit and beautiful family. Treat's leadership and talent taught me so much and today we lost a shining light. "My heart goes out to the family."
Marilu Henner, star of "Taxi", shared with people her lifelong friendship that she has had with Williams, whom they met in 1974-1975 when they appeared together on Broadway's "Over Here". She was allowed to stay with him as her career began to take off. They also co-starred in "Grease", a Broadway musical, and Hallmark Channel movies.
We never lost contact. "We always checked in and supported each other," she said to the outlet. "He was a remarkable person. He was so gifted. We were all a part of each other's life and were part of the Hallmark family. He was full of energy, he enjoyed being an actor, and he most loved his family. He loved his life. "This is so painful for all of us who love him."
