Home Invasion Suspect Seen Jumping Off Roof, Before Crashing to Ground Below

He tried to land, but bounced and fell to the ground. Officers, believing that he was armed, then fired at him.

Los Angeles Police Department released footage from a bodycam showing one of four suspects in a home invasion jumping off a roof to escape.

In September, police responded to a burglary scene. According police four male suspects entered an apartment and bound and gagged the victim before stealing his car keys.

In a call to 911, the building manager said that the four suspects were "going into people's apartments and they are trying to break in a unit at this very moment." Police identified the suspects as Aaron Flenoy (in his 20s), Justice Lockhart (in his 30s), Jeffrey Askew and Daiyaan Henderson.

The LAPD air unit observed Askew on the roof of an apartment building. While Lockhart, Flenoy and Askew were arrested without incident, they were not able to observe Askew. Age-restricted footage of the incident -- available here -- shows officers looking up at the roof just before Askew leapt off.

He bounced off the roof and landed between the two buildings, even though it looked like he was trying it.

The officers then approach Askew and shout at him to show his hand and not reach for his belt. "Don't do it, don't move, do not move!" They shout.

In a police statement, they said that as officers approached Askew in order to arrest him and provide aid, Askew reached into his waistband to remove what the officers thought was a gun. "Askew appeared to point the item in the direction of the officers, resulting in a Officer-Involved Shooting" (OIS). A 40mm Less Lethal Launcher foam round was also deployed simultaneously.

Officers approached Askew and determined that the object in his hands was a hammer. In the days following the incident, he was admitted to hospital and listed as in critical but stable conditions. At this time, his current condition is not known.

Henderson, the fourth suspect, "attempted to flee the perimeter by changing clothing and exiting from the front of apartment complex," however, he was caught by officers without incident.

All four men have been charged with felony offenses against people over 65, including home invasion burglary, residential burglary, and robbery. Flenoy, Henderson and both were charged with the personal use of firearms during a crime.

LAPD stated that they would "continue to analyze and investigate this incident" in order to "determine whether the use deadly force was compliant with LAPD policies and procedures and the thoroughness of the investigation."
