After the man entered the house, he "ran from the police," according to Tulsa cops. The homeowner then struck the intruder with his weapon.
According to authorities, a man who was allegedly hiding from police entered the wrong house in Oklahoma this week. He was met by a protective father with a machete.
Tulsa Police Department stated that suspect Ty Copeland broke into the home around 2 AM on February 28, by breaking into a bedroom window. Authorities say that Copeland started "throwing objects at the house and destroying other parts of it" and the homeowner was able to get his wife and children out.
The father grabbed a machete from the intruder and struck him with it. Copeland then "barricaded" himself in a bedroom until cops arrived. Officers arrived at the scene to find the victim's children and wife screaming in their front yard, while the father was inside.
Copeland was arrested with K-9 assistance and taken to a local hospital for "severe injuries and cuts from the machete strike and broken glass."
Ryan Edwards' text messages that put him in jail were revealed by legal documents
"I had to strike him to defend my family," said the homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous and spoke through a translator to Fox 23. It feels terrible. It hurts.
To the people who will listen, to do the exact same, defend your family. They must not be left alone. He said, "Do what you can to protect family." "There is nothing more, there's nothing less, it's your family," he said.
Danny Bean, Tulsa police officer, said that the incident "ofcourse... terrified everyone."
According to authorities, Copeland told officers that he was running from police and chose a random house to enter and hide. Copeland also said that he had smoked meth the night before.
Copeland's Native American status, and the 2020 McGirt ruling (which states that Native Americans can be prosecuted for crimes in this area under tribal and federal court jurisdiction, and not state courts) led to him being placed on an FBI Hold.
According to Tulsa PD his booking photo (above), is from a previous incident.
