Creative people often channel their emotions and personal experience into their work. Dr. Dre is an entrepreneur, producer and rapper. In his art, the tragic loss of Tyree and Jerome, this music star, Dr. Dre has made it clear, often in deeply heartbreaking ways. Dr. Dre seems to have made sorrow a positive force in his life.
Jerome, Dr. Dre’s brother, died of pneumonia when he was only 1 year old
Jerome Crayon, Dr. Dre’s half-brother, was the son of Dre’s mother, Verna, and Curtis Crayon. Verna was married to Dre's biological dad, but they divorced in 1968. Tragically, Jerome died from complications due to pneumonia infancy. Dre was just one years old when Jerome died, but it had a profound impact on his life.
His half-brother Tyree died after being attacked in 1989
Tyree Crayon was Dr. Dre’s other half-brother, whose mother was Verna Young. Tyree, then 21 years old, was attacked in Compton, California by an unknown assailant. Tyree suffered a fractured neck which tragically led to his death.
Even though it has been many years since Tyree's death, much remains a mystery. Although it was believed that Tyree was affiliated with The Crips there is not much known about the circumstances surrounding Tyree's death.
In 2021, crime website Savagewatch began to search for answers. They reached out to several agencies, including the Los Angeles Sheriff Department and the Los Angeles Police Department Cold Case Unit. The Compton Unit of Los Angeles Sheriff's Department was also contacted. After all the digging, there was nothing that could have helped to clarify Tyree's fate and/or identified his attacker(s).
If Tyree's death was ever investigated, one can only imagine the emotions Dr. Dre must feel. In an interview with blackdoctor, he revealed the extent of his love for Tyree: "My best friend...He was my whole life."
Dre has turned his pain into art
Dr. Dre once again expressed his brotherly, unending affection for Tyree in the lyrics to his song "The Message".
"Crying, pouring my heart out, pouring liquor behind it. We fought like brothers, something that we never should have done."
We could have spent our time arguing and telling the truth.
I had plans to watch him grow. He was talented too.
I don't know which hurts more: watching him leave or watching him go.
He shared his feelings with The Times London, stating that he believes his losses have driven his creativity and that he has avoided therapy out of fear that it would undermine his rap.
"There's a certain pain I feel, and I don't know why it's due to my brother's passing or other deaths in the family-but it is this thing," he said to The Times [ London].
"I don't know if it is right for me to get rid of it. He explained that he doesn't know if this is where my talent lies or my passion for what he does. "I was asked to talk about it, go to therapy, and what have you. But I don't think that's something I want to do. Because I don’t believe I should change it."
