How Jada Pinkett Smith's Book Was a Way to Give Her Flowers to Celebrity Friends (Exclusive)

Jada's memoir is full of anecdotes about how celebrities like Keenen Wayans, Warren Beatty and Prince helped her throughout her life.

Jada Smith has used her new book A Worthy to shed light on the ways in which others have helped her through her life.

The actress, who wrote the book as a memoir about "a woman's quest to discover the power of an unstoppable and indestructible self-love, the key to true empowerment, and the acceptance that led her to this place," also shared a number of stories about famous friends and coworkers throughout the book.

She told TooFab that she believes the people who she has written about will be "absolutely surprised" to learn how much she was impacted by their advice, support and words of wisdom.

Jada pinkett: 'Time living apart from Will Smith is coming to an end' (Exclusive).

You don't realize how little things can affect people in a positive or negative way. She continued. She continued.

She said to TooFab that she did not give any stars a heads-up, saying they "will read it when everyone else does."

The book is a tribute to Tupac Shakur, but it also contains stories about Josh Charles, MC Lyte and Keenen-Ivory Wayans. Warren Beatty, too, was mentioned in the book.

Continue reading to learn about some of her stories in worthy.

Josh Charles

Pinkett and Charles, The Good Wife, were friends in elementary school. They reconnected while both attending the Baltimore School for the Arts. In the book, she called him "the coolest dude" that she knew. She only briefly mentioned him in a story she wrote about playing hooky one day. However, she stated that he was "completely willing" to host her and another of her classmates at the apartment he shared with a friend after he started acting. The girls hoped to learn from him "how to get a real job in show business", but the trip got her into hot water with her mother.

Keenen Ivory Wayans

She met Keenen Wayans in Los Angeles after becoming good friends with his girlfriend. Jada said that he was "a mentor to her in the truest sense" at the time In Living Color became popular. He told her not to worry about it and to keep doing what she was doing. She also said that he was "ADAMANT", that she did not lie to give an alibi for her friend who is involved in the drug trade.

I'm thankful for Keenen. "I'm so thankful for Keenen. If he hadn’t taken the time and talked some sense into my arrogant, young, thick head, there's not knowing where I would've landed," wrote she, saying that he warned her to end up in prison. Wayans told her she could also use his name when looking for an agent. This changed the course of her career.

Eddie Murphy

She met Eddie Murphy at one of Wayans’ parties. He was "kind", she said, and shocked her when he told her he did not drink alcohol. She said of Murphy that "Eddie offered advice if asked, but most importantly, he gave the impression that focus and intent would win the day." She believed that "successful individuals around you will notice your efforts and want to assist you," rather than just asking for a free handout. Murphy, she said, "offered me an opportunity after he witnessed that I could continue making a way for my self."

Duane Martin

She met Duane later, while they were working on a pilot of a show named Moe's World. He quickly "became [her] big brother from day one and we've been championing each other eversince." Martin introduced her to Will Smith who wanted her as his girlfriend in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. She declined the role because she wanted to focus on her career. She claimed it led to "a heated exchange" with an "irritated" Martin. But she still stands by her choice.

Debbie Allen

Debbie Allen is someone Pinkett Smith praises a lot. She created the character of Lena James in A Different World for Jada after she auditioned for another role. Jada wrote: "Debbie Allen saw my promise and believed in me. She felt my presence. "I felt seen in a way that I'd never experienced before by this incredible woman. I felt loved. Since I met Debbie Allen, she has always loved, supported and cared about me, no matter what. I love you Debbie."

She thanked Allen as well for rearranging the schedule to allow her to appear in Menace II Society. Jada gave Tupac credit for getting her the role. He was originally supposed to be the star of the film but was fired when he got into a fight between the Hughes Brothers and the director. Jada claimed that she was going to quit the film after Tupac was fired. However, Tupac persuaded her to stay and launch her career.

MC Lyte

MC Lyte was another big name who became her friend after they met at an event in New York, in the 1990s. Jada described their friendship as a "beautiful brotherhood" that quickly developed. She went on to say Lyte was someone who loved her at both her best and worst.

Jada also had a "breakdown," and she felt suicidal, when she was in her 20s. Lyte booked a plane to LA immediately to help. Pinkett Smith said Allen also connected her with a therapist who prescribed Prozac to her for depression at the time. "Without a doubt, Allen saved my life."

The Prince

Jada described how Prince approached her at her house to discuss collaborating on a ballet opera he was creating. She also wrote about the meeting. She said that even though she "subtly frightened" him by posting photos of herself dressed up as him in lip-synch competitions, their relationship changed to one where he became her "mentor."

She added, "I was reassured when he appeared out of nowhere to befriended me. I was impressed by his kindness, respect and the value that he placed on my talents." "He provided me with the knowledge, understanding and support I needed at that point in my life."

Warren Beatty

Pinkett Smith revealed that she had read for the role in Bulworth opposite Warren Beatty. She told him the script wasn't "realistic" and she couldn't make the film. Jada Smith said that despite declining the role, Beatty invited her to lunch. He "pointed to how it might be beneficial to me to soften my attitude" in dealing with others.

He praised her humor, talent and charm but also noted that she could "come across as abrasive" at times.

She added that he had been "nonjudgemental", and she "appreciated the feedback." Jada saw him as asking her to "allow the joy under my hard exterior peek through" while telling her that she didn't need to "betray herself by softening [her] edges either."

Keanu Reeves

Jada writes in her memoir that, despite having "zero chemistry," with Keanu when she auditioned for the role Trinity in The Matrix she credits him as a part of what inspired her to pursue music.

She recalled that after being cast as Niobe, she told him about her musical dreams, as he was a member of his own band Dogstar. She said that Keanu told her to ignore what others have to say. It's not your issue, have fun.

She began her career in the metal band Wicked Wisdom and toured with Britney Spears, Ozzy Osbourne, and Britney.

Worthy is her new book and will be available on Tuesday, October 17.
