In light of health concerns, Queen Elizabeth cancels tradition Christmas lunch

Queen Elizabeth is among those who have cancelled holiday plans due to COVID concerns. Buckingham Palace sources claim that the queen cancelled her annual family lunch to protect herself from the virus.

"It's the Right Thing to Do"

The source stated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure because it could put Christmas plans at risk for many. "While it is regretted that the event was cancelled, there is still a belief that it is the right thing for everyone."

The lunch is usually held at Buckingham Palace. This year, however, the family would gather at Windsor Castle, where the queen stayed during the pandemic. Buckingham Palace did not comment publicly on the cancellation.

The Royal Family isn't alone in restraining social engagements from COVID concerns. After the UK had recorded its highest daily number of cases since the outbreak, the chief medical officer in England warned people not to mix with other people during the days leading up Christmas.

This will be the queen’s first Christmas without Prince Philip, her husband who died in April this year. They had been married for over 70 years. An insider said to People that no matter what her private grief, she would like to move on as joyfully as possible.

The Duke and Duchess Of Sussex will not be attending

This is not the only person who will be absent from the royal family holiday celebrations. Despite being invited, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won't be spending Christmas with their family. The couple will instead spend a quiet holiday in California with their children Archie, Lilibet.

The Queen Elizabeth will soon travel to Sandringham, where she will be joined by the rest of her royal family. Family members will arrive on Christmas Eve and open their gifts later that night. The royals will attend St. Mary's Magdalene Church for Christmas Day services, and then return home for private celebrations. Many believe her plans for holidays are a sign she is recovering from a series health scares.

After being advised to rest, the queen was admitted to hospital in October. She then cancelled several public engagements. After injuring her back, she pulled out of a Remembrance Day appearance in November.
