A new documentary explains why the police were alerted when Grace, who was either a girl in her teens or a woman pretending to be a teenager, moved into her second apartment by herself... just before her adoptive brother had a shocking hot mic moment.
The fourth episode of ID’s "The Curious Case of Natalia Grace", a docuseries about her adoption, took a deeper dive into the way her adoptive parents came under scrutiny by the law after their daughter, whom they thought was in her 20s, and not a young child, was moved to an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana, on her own.
Quick refresher: Michael Barnett and Kristina Barrnett claim that Natalia, who was born in 2010 with spondyloepiphyseal dissplasia, came to them via an adoption agency and they were told at the time she was six. They began to question her age, and in June 2012 the Marion County Superior Court decided to change the girl’s birth record so that it indicated she was born 1989, not 2003. The Barnetts gave her her own apartment shortly after the change.
In the previous episode of this six-part series, her parents had allegedly set her up in a Westfield apartment. Her lease was not renewed after neighbors complained about her behavior. She had to move because of this.

Michael was a major participant in the documentary. He appeared in this episode and claimed that the new apartment was located in a perfect place for her. It had a Salvation Army nearby, a bus stop, mental healthcare facilities, and an grocery store near which she could get food stamps. Kyna noted that the apartment was on the second level, which she thought was not ideal for a person with Natalia’s needs.
Weaver claimed that Grace, after Natalia moved near her house, came to her home and said she had no food. She needed to call her family. Grace allegedly did not know how to operate a telephone or her parents' phone number. Kyna became concerned when she said that the girl was "left to the wolves" before describing how dangerous the neighborhood was. Weaver said that she always carries a gun with her, both inside and outside her home. Natalia's neighbor, who is a convicted sex offender said that she was alone all the time.
Weaver cried as she expressed her regret at not having done more to help Natalia. She said that she hoped, "she is living a happy life and I do hope she receives the justice she deserves." She continued, "Despite her age, Natalia was scared and alone, and that situation shouldn't have ever happened." "If I saw the Barnetts I would just start swinging."
The neighbor claimed that Natalia "disappeared" at one time, before the Barnetts received a phone call from her GED adult center saying they had not seen her. The parents eventually learned that she was living with a woman called Cynthia Mans. Michael said that was a "concerning development" and that they had contacted adult protective services after speaking to Cynthia. He continued to say that Mans had spent "all Natalia’s food money," was Natalia’s social security recipient, and sublet out the girl's flat. Michael and Kristine Barnett divorced in 2014. Michael moved back to Indiana and called the split "rough" and "not amicable."
Mans was contacted by Detective Brandon Davenport in 2005, asking if they had ever considered adopting Natalia.
We tried to get legal guardianship, but the court denied us. She has been with us for over a year. She's been with us for 5 years. Her parents were angry with her and cut off her electricity. Mans said in a phone conversation with Davenport that she told Natalia, "You don't need to stay here any more. You're going to live at my place." Cynthia then claimed that Natalia "was scared of Kristine" who would "yell at her."
Michael was then visited by the detective at his house, who started asking many questions about Natalia. Michael claimed that Kristine was a master manipulator and dropped Natalia off in Lafayette, believing it to be a white trash town where no one would notice or care about their daughter. She also believed she could not "con" or "manipulate" anyone. Michael responded to the detective by saying that he thought Natalia would be around 15-16 years old in 2019.
After the investigation and the conversation, the Barnetts faced charges of child neglect. Michael was surprised by this charge.
"To be accused of something like this is embarrassing, appalling and disgusting," he stated. "Suddenly I'm the bad guy in the universe, but my ex-wife Kristine is the one who was in charge." I had no control of any of this."
The ex-partners then fight over who is really to blame for Natalia's misfortune. Kristine did not do interviews for this documentary so viewers only saw Michael's perspective and his son Jacob who lives in the basement. Michael said he had not seen his sons for years and that they "wanted nothing to do" with him. He said, "We were all abused in this household and Kristine perpetrated the abuse."
Michael claimed that his ex-wife Kristine used to force Natalia to stand with her nose against the wall until she wrote down all of the people she'd "lived" with and revealed who she was "really." He claimed that one of these sessions lasted for hours and Natalia "defecated" on herself. Michael claimed that he had told police Kristine "beat Natalia to hell" on several occasions. He then reenacted what a beating looked like on his hands, knees and back. In an audio recording of his conversation with Davenport he stated, "I am stunned that Natalia’s body didn't break into a million pieces."
Michael claimed to have a recording of a alleged beating before telling Kristine that "She deserved this, but she still did." She did not appear to deny these allegations. Instead, she wrote, "Whatever. She was very evil, and you know it." She's a psychopath. You're a sociopath. "You're lying and threatening people to get my husband into her room, and you're poisoning them to do it."
Jacob's POV was the focus of the last few moments of episode four, where he claimed that his mother and adopted sister were in a "hostile relationship." He felt Kristine thought the girl was a "hostile agent" who is "not who she claims to be and intends to harm."
Natalia, according to my mom, infiltrated her family and was out to hurt us. My mom said she did nothing wrong, and that she was following the advice of her therapists. "I can assure that no therapist would recommend this specific action. A therapist who did this would lose his or her license.
It's obvious that someone has wronged another. It is easy to categorize people as good or bad, but bad people can do good things. He continued: "I just don't wish to assign blame in a false way." He admitted that both he and his mom were going through a difficult time at the time the interview was conducted.
"Recently I had many questions and concerns about childhood. I called her. I thought she would acknowledge what I said. Jacob said, "I didn't expect an apology. I got none. "I asked her about Natalia but I am not comfortable with sharing it here. In part, I am protecting my mother by not being explicit. I know my mom is not innocent. I am therefore in a difficult situation, as I do not want to hurt anyone. "I know that this might not be possible."
Jacob didn't want to say more when a producer said off-camera that Jacob could "exonerate" a young girl. He got up, walked away from the camera but did not remove his microphone. On a hot microphone, he was caught talking to his dad about the producers' interview.
"So, I told them my last conversation with my mother. "I guess the moral thing that I've been struggling to is if she can be redeemed I don't believe it's worth further dragging down her character," he told his dad. He was clearly worried about what he could or should say on camera.
"I told you the truth in all its fullness." Michael said to his son, "That's just a nicer way of saying that I loaded two shots into a shotgun and fired." "It's okay. I think I'm entitled to my story. I didn't tell them. "I didn't mention kicking the stairs down."
"We said we wouldn't say anything about kicking down the stairs, right?" Jacob said that his plan for today was not to but to say it. He was concerned about the "legal recourse" they might have to cover up whatever story was being hid. Then he noticed that he still had a microphone on, and the episode ended when he said, "I'm such an idiot." F---."
Michael was cleared on October 27, 2022 of the four charges of neglect he faced, and Kristine's charges were dismissed in March 20,23.
Tonight, ID will air two additional episodes of "The Curious Case Of Natalia Grace".
