Dementia is a common condition in people over 90 years old. This rumor is best supported by Woodward's absence from public life since 2013.

USA Today reported that Newman learned of Woodward's terminal cancer in 2007 just days after Woodward was first diagnosed. Although the family has not yet released an official statement on this matter, it is safe to assume that they are true.
