Jada Smith says that her long-time friend Tipac Shakur asked her to marry him while he served time for sexual assault.

"I discuss this in my book when I visit him at Rikers." She said that when she had to speak her words and write about it in the audiobook, "that was probably the most painful part."

Pinkett Smith said, "Seeing him in that condition and leaving him there in such a bad state, it was a terrible thing to do." "So, when he first asked me to marry him, he had been in Rikers, and I knew that A. He needed someone to spend time with him. I was going to do that anyway. "You don't need to marry me in order to do this, I am here."

She told him that he was "in need of a rock at the time" and, because they had been friends for so long and shared so much together, "he wanted to feel a solidified foundation." Pinkett Smith believed that if she had said yes, the relationship would not have lasted. She stated, "I promise, he'd have married me, and divorced as soon as his arse left."

She continued to say that before his incarceration, he had a "positive shift in his demeanor." She concludes: "I think for him, he felt that if he could tether himself, it would keep him on a path."

Pinkett Smith met Shakur during her sophomore year of Baltimore School of the Arts. While they were close friends, Pinkett Smith has been insistent over the years that there was never a romantic relationship between them.
