"One minute you make mint tea at home and the next, you are invited to be the Black face for a troubled white organization." You know what life is like?
The 80th Golden Globe Awards was going to be different, right from the beginning. Jerrod Carmichael reminded everyone that he was the show’s first-ever Black host. He took the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to its first televised broadcast, after it had been a year.
The show aired virtually in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, The Globes were not televised in 2022 after a series public scandals in the year prior to the event. After it was pointed out that the HFPA, the organization behind the telecast, had no Black members, the HFPA was the first to be criticised for its lack of diversity. Critics also claimed that this contributed to some of their most puzzling snubs.

The HFPA was also accused of unethical behavior in obtaining nominations. They were rewarded for projects that gave them access to their stars. Publicists from Hollywood refused to work with HFPA after receiving proof of "profound, lasting change". People like Tom Cruise have even returned past trophies as protest.
As the number of boycotts grew, NBC cancelled the ceremony in 2022 and replaced it with Twitter awards. The HFPA announced a revision to their bylaws. This included new measures to improve diversity and inclusion, and address ethical questions.
Carmichael, who took control of the broadcast's tone immediately at the top, calmly paced backwards and asked the assembled A-list stars, "Let’s be quiet here."
He actually sat at center stage, creating an intimacy on a night well-known for celebrity drinking and carousing.
"I'll tell ya why I'm here. To kick things off, he stated that he was here "cause I am Black" before going on to discuss some of the racial controversy that the HFPA has dealt with over the past two years.

He stated, pointedly, "This show, The Golden Globe Awards, did not air last Year because of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I won't claim that they were racist, but they didn’t have a single Black member before George Floyd died." You can do whatever you like with this information.
He described the moment he received the call from Stephen Hill, a producer asking him to host the show. It was a real challenge for him to understand the questions and decide if he would take on the responsibility.
He said, "One minute you make mint tea at home, and the next you are invited to be the Black face for an embattled white organisation." "Life is fast. You know that."
He claimed that he had told Hill that he knew Hill was asking him to do it because he is Black. Hill denied it, but he shared his thoughts with Carmichael, who thought, "Stephen's Black so what does he really know?" He's just producing the show because he is Black. They won't tell him why he is here.
Carmichael shared an anecdote with a friend, where he said that it "for the sakes of this monologue represents all Black persons in America" and was then told, "Boy! If you don't put a good suit on and take them money."
He continued to ramble on about the behind-the scenes moves that took place before the broadcast. He claimed that he was invited by Helen Hoehne, President of HFPA, but he declined politely. He said, "I can tell a trap from a trap."
Carmichael responded when they asked for it again, but said it wasn't really a request. Hard. "Or what? They are going to fire me. In 79 years, they haven't had any Black hosts. They'll fire the first one. I'm un-fireable."
He also stated that he doesn’t care about the changes made by the HFPA in the two years prior to this awards show. Because he accepted the job "assuming that they hadn’t changed at all"
However, the host ended on a positive note by stating that he accepted the job due to the talented artists who were present. "Whatever the history of Hollywood Foreign Press Association, this evening is one where we get to celebrate, which I believe this industry deserves."
