Jerry Orbach died in 2004 following a long battle with prostate cancer. The Broadway legend and Law & Order host battled the disease for much longer than many realize. Be brave throughout his entire run on the show.
Legend in His Time
Orbach was a Broadway star before he became Detective Lennie Briscoe of the NYPD. He was the son of a vaudeville performer and quickly rose to prominence in theater. He was a star in The Fantasticks and received numerous Tony nominations over the years. He was nominated for an Emmy for his appearance on The Golden Girls. Disney fans also know him as the voice of Lumiere Beauty and the Beast. He's also loved for his role as Baby's father on Ditty Dancing.
After a guest appearance in 1992, Orbach was invited to join Law & Order's third season. Orbach took over as head detective from Paul Sorvino. Law & Order won Orbach international acclaim and he stayed on for eleven and a quarter seasons. Lennie Briscoe is still one of the most beloved characters from the show's long history. Briscoe was also nominated for an Emmy Award in 1997.
It's almost impossible to live the entire time
Orbach was diagnosed in 1994 with prostate cancer, just a few years into his tenure as Law & Order. Orbach fought the disease on and off for more than a decade. Orbach was fighting the disease for almost his entire life.
He decided to keep the news of his cancer diagnosis secret from the public. His death was only weeks away when he received the news about his diagnosis. It is quite sad to read what people like Dick Wolf said at the time. "We expect him make a full recovery and while he's receiving treatment, we will work around that schedule."
Orbach was preparing to take over the spinoff program Law & Order : Trial By Jury at the time of his passing. Orbach is buried at Trinity Church in Manhattan. This cemetery also holds Alexander Hamilton.
Tributes Pour In
Orbach received one of the most prestigious honors that the theater world can bestow upon an actor when the lights were turned off on Broadway. In 2005, he was posthumously awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Law & Order by his wife. A street was named in his honour: 53rd Street in Manhattan was renamed "Jerry Orbach Way".
After Law & Order ended its run in 2010, Orbach received more tributes. Many praised his skill and knowledge. It is amazing to think that he was able to create such a memorable character while battling cancer.
