Jimmy Kimmel Takes Aim at Absent Tom Cruise, James Cameron and 'The Slap' in Oscars Monologue

Jimmy Kimmel Takes Aim at Absent Tom Cruise, James Cameron and 'The Slap' in Oscars Monologue

Jimmy Kimmel, a very insider Oscars monologue, addresses the "slap", Steven Spielberg and Brendan Fraser, Ke Huy Quan Nicole Kidman, and many more -- but very gently.

After a fun montage of scenes from this years nominated movies, and lots of behind-the scenes footage of the making this year's films, the 95th Oscars brought Jimmy Kimmel to the stage.

Late-night host, Tom Cruise, joined "Top Gun: Maverick" to appear in a few scenes with him. He was flying fighter jets and then parachuted into the show to start things off with a mild monologue. It was probably safer to be safe than sorry after one joke caused one nomination last year.

Kimmel addressed "the slap", but he did so with far greater restraint than expected. He waited to address the dominant moment of last year's show until the end of his monologue, and then he retreated from it. He was a calm and collected man before that.

His first joke was gentle and lighthearted. He said that Nicole Kidman was finally freed from the abandoned AMC, where she had been held captive for over two years. He told her that he was grateful for the encouragement to people who had been to the theater to visit the theater.

He noted all the first-time nominees and took particular delight in the fact that Brendan Fraser as well as Ke Huy Quan were nominated at the same time. They are not only the front-runners in Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor but were also co-stars in 1992.

Kimmel stated that two actors from "Encino Man" are up for Oscars, referring to their hilarious comedy. "What an amazing night this must have been for you both, and how difficult for Pauly Shore."

He spent some time making jokes about John Williams and Steven Spielberg, who both made Oscars history by being nominated. Spielberg is the first director to be nominated in six decades. Williams is the oldest nominee at 91.

Spielberg gave him a few laughs, and then he added some drug humor to make it more interesting. Seth Rogen was also nearby. But it was pretty mild. Then he spoke about Spielberg's role as director of the actors playing his parents in intimate scenes. Let's just say that everyone was a bit embarrassed.

He did take a few barbs about Tom Cruise and James Cameron. He made it a point of publicly mentioning rumors that Cameron had opted out due to not being nominated for the "Avatar" movie. He asked, "How can the Academy not nominate this guy who directed "Avatar?" He is, or was he a woman?

He made fun of Scientology by saying that Cruise was wearing his shirt in "Top Gun", before commenting on the absence of both men. He said, "The two men who insist we go to theater didn't come to theater."

Kimmel, when commenting on Rihanna’s performance, said that her baby had pooped during rehearsals so he could inquire if the audience remembered the last time they saw someone go backstage. Kimmel then said, "That accountant who mixed the envelopes" and went "Inside Baseball."

It's a famous moment in Oscars history, but it was six years ago, and he didn't offer any context. It was actually "Moonlight" that was chosen as the winner. This is an Oscars moment of chaos that will be remembered forever, much like last year's big moment.

Kimmel mentioned "the slap between Will Smith and Chris Rock" earlier in the monologue, when he was talking about five Irish acting nominees. He joked that "the odds for another fight happening onstage went way up."

Kimmel, who waited until Rock's latest stand-up special before he went all in on the incident, did a deep dive into the topic and emphasized safety. Oscars created a crisis team for the event that something similar should happen again.

Kimmel jokingly said, "If any member of this theater commits a violent act at any stage in the show you will be awarded an Oscar for Best Actor"

He then called out everyone and said, "If anything unexpected or violent happens, just do the same thing as last year." Nothing. Do nothing. He added, "Maybe even give your assailant an hug."

Then he warned the audience that anyone who decides to run off the stage in a mad rush to "Get Jiggy Wit It" will have to deal with a lot of people like Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Kred, Michelle Yeoh, "The Mandalorian", and even two Guillermo (Del Toro's late-night sidekick).
