Is Johnny Depp made from Teflon Despite years of controversy, the bad boy has remained one Hollywood's highest-paid actors until the '10s. He was able to earn lucrative roles despite addiction, alcoholism and assault charges.
It may be time for the actor to pay the price. He has been involved in a number of expensive lawsuits over the past decade. His former management team made shocking revelations about him that he had spent his time flushing his money down the toilet. Get the facts on Johnny Depp's net worth over the past decade and how it has fallen.
Johnny Depp is one of Hollywood's Most Highly Paid Actors
Depp has made a lot of progress since his days as a teen idol on TV. His earnings soared from $45,000 for each episode of 21 Jump Street to alleged millionaires for his role in Donnie Brasco, which he was critically acclaimed for.
Depp's performances as a gangster ("Public Enemies"), a cocaine smuggler ("Blow") and a mob boss (" Black Mass) are beloved by many. He made his fortune playing the lead role in family-friendly movies. He was reportedly paid over $300 million to play Jack Sparrow in five episodes of Pirates of the Caribbean.
It's clear that Depp's name will be on any film. He has been called an actor who is overpaid. According to the Telegraph, he earned another staggering sum for his role as the Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderland. This was a role that he played for 50 million pounds or $68 million USD.
It seems like the actor, or at least those managing his career, had excellent business acumen. In 2020, even though he was dropped by the Fantastic Beasts franchise for filming only one scene, he still received $16million despite a pay-or play contract that didn't have a morality clause.
You might be left wondering how Depp allowed so much money to slip through his fingers.
Johnny Depp Has Outrageous Spending Habits
According to the Hollywood Reporter Depp was first informed of his financial problems in 2012. Joel Mandel and Jake Bloom, his lawyer, confronted Depp in his Hollywood Hills compound. They informed him that his $2,000,000 per month lifestyle was not sustainable. They said he didn't have enough liquid assets for his expenses.
Depp offered to sell his yacht of 156 feet for quick cash. The boat was $18 million to purchase and renovate, plus an additional $350,000 monthly to maintain.
Depp resigned Mandel and Tracey Jacobs, his manager, in 2016 unceremoniously. He then filed a $25 million lawsuit against Mandel's company, TMG, accusing them both of fraud and mismanagement.
TMG counter-sued, and sought a court declaration saying that Depp was responsible for his financial waste.
All sorts of shocking revelations about Depp's spending habits were revealed during the ongoing drama. TMG's countersuit claimed that Depp spent lavishly: He bought 14 homes and more than 200 pieces fine art, including Warhol and Klimt pieces.
Tabloids were quick to point out one expense: Depp's $30,000 per month wine budget. Depp, who has struggled for years with alcohol, addressed the rumor head on.
He told Rolling Stone that he spent $30,000 on wine. "Because it cost far more."
This was only the beginning of financial woes. There were many eyebrows raised by the fact that Hunter S. Thompson spent $5 million to have his ashes shot out of a cannon.
Depp stated to the Wall Street Journal, "It's mine money." "It's my business to buy 15,000 cotton balls per day.
TMG settled the actor for an undisclosed amount in 2018.
His Divorce from Amber Heard cost him millions
It's easy to overlook Depp's lavish lifestyle. However, it is worth noting that his split from Amber Heard also caused a major impact on his finances.
She accepted a settlement of $7 million in 2016, three months after Heard filed for divorcing. She rescinded her request for a domestic violence order and her request for $50,000 per month in spousal support. (Heard had previously claimed that Depp had thrown a phone at her and bruised her face. But LAPD found no evidence of such a crime.
The drama did not end there. Depp sued Heard in 2019 for $50 million. She had written an opinion piece about domestic abuse victims for the Washington Post. Heard responded with a $100 million defamation lawsuit. After multiple delays, the trial was finally concluded on June 1, 2022. Depp was awarded $15 million in punitive and compensatory damages by the jury.
Depp was successful in his defamation lawsuit against Heard. However, he has been faced with many other legal problems in recent years. After he filed a lawsuit against British tabloid The Sun, a judge ruled in favor the publication. Because the headline calling him a "wife-beater", could not be taken as damaging. Depp was ordered by a judge to pay $840,000 for The Sun's legal costs. Depp applied for permission to appeal, but was denied.
Heard isn’t the only ex-fiancée he has had to dig deep into his pockets. Depp did not marry Vanessa Paradis, his ex-girlfriend, but the French actress and singer bore two of his children. Depp offered to financially support his ex-wife, Vanessa Paradis, after their split. Although it is not known what the payment was, he offered to financially support her after their split. His generosity included a $4.5million home.
Depp found himself in a difficult romantic relationship and also paid off others to avoid trouble. He settled with two ex-bodyguards in 2019 for unpaid overtime, unpaid wages, and illegal business practices.
Johnny Depp's Net Worth Today
Depp's net worth is currently estimated at $150 million per Celebrity Worth. This doesn't include the $15 million he won in the Amber Heard defamation suit. But that's still a lot less than the $650 million Mandel, his ex-accountant, claimed he earned during the 13+ years The Management Group managed him. The years of lavish spending and legal problems certainly took their toll.
It is difficult to predict whether Depp will make a comeback or how his current lawsuits will go. We are certain that he isn't giddy about his nine-figure net worth. Keep watching to see what the ongoing trial does to his bottom line.
