The actor, who played Henry VIII in "Firebrand", said this during the press conference for the film at the Cannes Film Festival.
Jude Law's portrayal of Henry VIII, in the historical thriller "Firebrand," was as trueas he could make it. And we're not even talking about his costumes.
The actor said that he used a perfume to portray the famous monarch who later suffered from a number of ailments, including obesity and leg ulcers. He also revealed that he had swollen feet, constipation and possibly even gout.
"I read several accounts that you could scent -- at this time -- you could even smell Henry from three rooms away, because his leg rotted so badly. Law, 50, was sitting with Karim Ainouz, the director of the film, and Alicia Vikander who plays Katherine Parr (Henry VIII's final and sixth wife), when he said that he hid it using rose oil. "I thought that it would make a big impact if I smelled awful."
He continued by saying that he had found "a brilliant perfumer" who "makes wonderful smells, but also makes awful smells." The Oscar nominee continued, adding that he found "a brilliant perfumier" who "makes wonderful scents, but also makes awful scents."
Law claimed to have sprayed "very subtly" the perfume, but revealed that things went terribly wrong when Ainouz got "ahold of it."
Ainouz laughed as Law said, "It was a spraying-fest!" Ainouz admitted to spraying the disgusting concoction on the floor when the stars left the set for a meal.
Vikander & Law revealed, in a hilarious way, that they had photos of crew members gagging while filming.
Ainouz said, "It was horrible when [Law] came on set."
According to the website of the Cannes Film Festival, the synopsis of "Firebrand," reads: In a blood-soaked Tudor England in which Katherine Parr is the sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII is named Regent, while the tyrant Henry fights overseas. Katherine Parr has tried everything to ensure a better future for her family based on the radical Protestant views she holds. The King, who is increasingly paranoid and ill, turns on the radicals and accuses Katherine's childhood best friend of treason. He then burns her to death. Katherine is horrified and inconsolable, but she must deny the truth. She fights for her survival. Conspiracy is heard throughout the palace. Everyone is waiting for the queen's slip-up, or for Henry to grab her by the head as he has done with previous wives. Will Katherine, with the future of freedom from tyranny on the line, submit to the inevitable in the interest of King and Country?
"Firebrand", which premiered at Cannes, received an 8-minute standing ovation.
