"It is now impossible"

Judi Dench opens up about her degenerative eye disease and how it has affected her art.

The 88-year old "Belfast", actress, said that her vision was preventing her from learning her lines while appearing on "The Graham Norton Show."

Dench stated, "It is impossible. Because I have a photographic memories, I need to locate a machine that not just teaches me my lines but also tells where they appear on a page." It used to be very simple for me to remember lines. I could read the entire of Twelfth Night right away."

Although she was diagnosed with macular disease more than a decade ago, the Oscar-winning actress has not allowed her condition to stop her from acting.

Dench isn't the only one to open up about her condition. In 2021, she also spoke about her vision problems at a benefit for Vision Foundation (a London-based charity that aids those with vision loss).

According to The Guardian, the famous actress claimed that she started to memorize scripts after losing her ability to read.

She shared that she found a way to just get around and overcome the difficulties she encountered.

Dench said, "I had to find another method of learning lines and other things. This is having great friends repeat them to me over an and over." "So I must learn through repetition. I hope people don't notice how many lines are hopeless!"

The actress in "Skyfall", now relies on her castmates for guidance.

She said, "I was doing The Winter's Tale with Kenneth Branagh, playing Paulina, a few years back, and he said to us -- I have a long, long speech at the ending -- he said, 'Judi. If you were to speak that speech eight feet away from your right, it would be to me and not the pros.'
