Both the woman's dad and a forensic psychiatrist spoke on her behalf. Her father testified that his daughter had spent time in a mental center because "she wasn't in a good state of mind."
After , a jury found Taylor Schabusiness liable for all counts of murdering and dismembering Shad Thyrion. They were then asked to decide whether she was mentally ill when the crimes occurred.
They decided on Thursday afternoon that she was and not. This means she is legally responsible and liable for Thyrion’s murder, as well as the charges of first degree intentional homicide and mutilating the corpse. She had also been convicted of these charges the day before.
The judge instructed the jury that they only had to answer two questions before they could reach a verdict.
Do you know if the defendant had a mental disorder or disease at the time of the crime? They had to determine if the defendant was unable to understand the crime or conform the act to the law.
In this case they answered "no" to the first part of the question. There were no dissenting jury members.
Schabusiness, if they had ruled differently, would have been sent into a mental facility; now, she will be heading to prison. Deliberations lasted less than an hour. Her sentencing date has been set to September 26.
Taylor Schabusiness, Dad Say 'Go Bears!' After He Testified In Her Defense, Jury Considers Mental Status
In the second phase of her trial, Schabusiness’ lawyer called both her father and an expert forensic psychologist to testify on her behalf. Her dad said that his daughter had spent time at a psychiatric facility, because she was "not in the right mental state." He said she had been treated with medication in the past and that he was always concerned about her mental and physical health.
A forensic psychology expert also testified in the defense. He reportedly said that Schabusiness was nonverbal during their two meetings, and that Taylor threw her a chair during a visit. She also stated that Schabusiness, to her, was psychotic.
The prosecution called an expert from the state who evaluated Schabusiness's past diagnoses, and her behavior.
The was that Schabusiness had choking to death her lover during a drug-fueled sexual romp, before dismembering . His severed head was found by his mother in the basement of her home on February 23, 2022. She first entered a plea of not guilty due to insanity.
Taylor was arrested after Thyrion’s mother found his head in a bucket at her basement home. She said that Taylor was the last to see her son.
Police said that when they arrived at Taylor's house, her clothes were covered with dried blood. When they searched a minivan for "additional body parts, including legs," the police found a crockpot box.
In an interview with police shown to the court Wednesday, Schabusiness admitted that she spent the entire day smoking meth with the victim. They started having sex after they arrived at his mother’s house, and even used chains.
She claimed that Thyrion began coughing blood and his face became purple, but "still did not stop". He died in 3-5 minutes. Schabusiness claimed that she "didn’t want him dying" because he was "her buddy," but "wanted" to "see what would happen."
She replied that she felt bad and thought, "Damn, he will be wheezing if I don't kill him."
She told police that she had "played a little with him" when she realized he'd died. She also claimed to have performed oral sex, played with his penis, and used a sexual toy on her corpse.
Schabusiness said that she also "cuddled" his body. She said, "I was sucking while cutting at the same moment."
She said that she took four knives out of the kitchen to dismember him. This included a breadknife. Schabusiness claimed that she had left the house because she was "always hearing footsteps and gunshots" -- adding "It's a strange night."
She replied that she did not feel it was the "right thing" to do.
She said "I didn't realize that." When asked "Do you think someone who kills and dismembers another person shouldn't go to prison?" She replied, "Oh, f--- yeah. This s--- is f ----ed."
