Kate Winslet Was Told to Settle For 'Fat Girl' Roles, Calls It 'Heartwarming' Industry Is Changing

Kate Winslet Was Told to Settle For 'Fat Girl' Roles, Calls It 'Heartwarming' Industry Is Changing

"When I was younger, my agent would receive calls asking me how much weight she weighed. I kid you not"

Kate Winslet recalls her experiences with body-shaming when she was a young actress.

The "Titanic," 47-year-old star of the show spoke out to The Sunday Times about the negative comments she received from industry agents in her early career. She first revealed that she was called "blubber" as a child and was told to settle for "fat girls" roles at acting school.

The actress spoke out about how she was judged back then and the pressures that women today face on social media platforms.

Winslet said, "It can sometimes be extremely negative." "People are subjected to scrutiny that is greater than what a young and vulnerable person can handle."

Kate said, "But in film industry it is really changing." "When I was younger, my agent would call asking me how my weight was. I kid you not. It's so heartwarming to see this change."

The "Avatar: The Way of The Water” star said that women today -- including her 22 year-old daughter Mia - are much more assertive and strong about advocating for their rights.

Winslet said, "My daughter's generation is able to speak for itself," They have learned that they will be heard. They know how to use the voice of their voice, even young women. It's quite striking.

"When you were younger, you spoke when you were spoken to. She said that this is no longer the case. Young women are stronger. They are prouder of their bodies.

When Winslet was starring in hit films like "Hamlet", "Titanic," and other late-90s blockbuster films, she was subject to a lot of body-shaming from celebrities tabloids to public figures like Joan Rivers. Rivers once stated, "If Kate Winslet had lost a few pounds the Titanic wouldn't have sunk."

Winslet spoke out about her early days in the industry in a conversation with The Guardian in February 2021.

She recalled that people used to talk a lot about her weight in her 20s. "And then I would be asked to comment on myself. Then I was labeled as outspoken and ballsy. "I was not defending myself.

Kate said, "It was almost comical how shocking, critical, and how cruel tabloid journalists were for me." "I was still trying to figure out who the hell I was!" They'd comment on my weight, estimate my weight, and print the diet they suggested I was on. It was so distressing to read and extremely critical.
