Katherine Heigl Talks to Ellen Pompeo About 'Mouthy' Comments: 'I Was So Naive'

Katherine Heigl Talks to Ellen Pompeo About 'Mouthy' Comments: 'I Was So Naive'

In a conversation that covered a range of topics as part Variety's "Actors on Actors", Pompeo explains why she "fought against" the famous "pick-me" line from "Grey's Anatomy."

"Grey's Anatomy'alumnus Katherine Heigl looks back on the criticism she received during the early days of her career for making now infamous comments about some projects.

Heigl, in a wide-ranging interview with her former "Grey's Anatomy" co-star Ellen Pompeo as part of Variety's series "Actors on Actors, reflected on her controversial remarks which led to her being labeled "difficult".

She quit the show "Grey's Anatomy" in 2010, after six seasons of starring opposite Pompeo's Meredith Grey.

"I was so innocent. Heigl said to Pompeo, "I got up on my soapbox. I had some things I wanted to say and I was really passionate about these topics." "I felt strongly. I felt so strongly, I even got out a megaphone on my soapbox. I never imagined a negative reaction. "I felt justified in my feelings and what I was thinking."

She went on to say, "It only took me a moment to stop feeling like a victim after the reaction I received and the noise that was being made."

"I think that most women spend their lives in this people-pleasing mode. "It's very disconcerting to feel that you have disappointed everyone," she said. It was not my intention, but I did have some things to say and I didn't expect such a strong response. I was in late 20s."

It wasn't until she was in her "mid to late 30s" that the "Firefly Lane "star could "really tune out all of the noise" and asked herself: "But, who are you?" Are you a bad person? Are you ungrateful? Are you unprofessional? "Are you unprofessional?"

"Because, I'm confused!" "I thought maybe I was," said Pompeo. "I believed this version and felt shame for a very long time. Then I had to say, "Wait. Whom am I listening to? I don't even listen to myself. "I know who I am.

Pompeo, who had previously shown her support for Heigl, told her former co star that she was "just little early" and joked that she would have gotten her own "megaphone" if only she had waited until Twitter launched.

Pompeo continued to say that "nobody is a fan of a confident woman." He cited the idea as to why they "are taking away reproductive rights and voting rights in this country because they don't like women finding their power."

They don't want to hear women speak. They don't like women having control, as they believe we are better at it. Heigl responded, "For me, 40 was a liberating age, since I no longer had to be that young, innocent, naive ingenue who is always trying to please people. I was no longer the young, sweet, naive ingenue who tries to please everyone.

Pompeo replied, "I'm not sure about the sweet part." I wouldn't call you sweet. That's the problem. "Sweet, they can deal with."

The 53-year old actress reminded Heigl of her childhood as a child actor, and that "she grew up in the studio, being told how to act, where to go to, what words to use, how to feel, thoughts to have, what food to eat or when to eat it, and when to sleep."

It made my life easier. Then you grow older and you are expected to make your own decisions. Heigl explained that "Grey's" hit and brought about the success. "I think it gave me a false confidence. This confidence was based on something that I knew wouldn't last and probably never would. Then I got really mouthy because I had a lot of things to say and I didn't want certain boundaries or things crossed. I didn't have the skills to combat that."

The two women discussed "Grey's Anatomy" throughout the conversation. Pompeo revealed a scene that people frequently bring up to Pompeo.

In Season 2, Meredith Grey (Pompeo) begs Derek Sheppard to choose her. She says at one point "Pick Me, Choose Me, Love Me." Pompeo, who was not a fan of the line, said that she "fought" it.

Heigl told Pompeo that "I know there are dialogue lines people often quote to you." Pompeo replied "OK, so this is real." They say, "Oh, she is a pick me girl."

Oh, my God! "Is that what it means?" Heigl replied "Yes" to Pompeo's question. I'm wondering, "What is a pick-me girl?" They were like: "You know girls who are always like, "Pick Me, Choose Me!"." I was like, "Hello? Who invented the "pick Me Girl "?'"?

Pompeo told reporters, "Listen I don't remember if you recall that I fought so hard against that speech." "That is another interesting aspect of life -- there are some things I am so against and I thought, 'I cannot beg a male on television!' This is embarrassing. Then it becomes one of the most famous moments in history."

Heigl added, "It really was a beautiful moment."
