Kathy Griffin Says She Has 'Extreme Case' of Complex PTSD After 2017 Trump Controversy

In a series TikToks, Kathy Griffin explains how her PTSD diagnosis impacts her everyday life and says that she has sought help from Sia to deal with it.

Kathy Griffin's career has taken a nosedive in the last five years after she published a political comment post which had a huge backlash.

In a TikTok video released this week, the comedian, 62 years old opens up about the psychological fallout of that time in her life. In 2017, after sharing a bloodied photo of her holding a fake Donald Trump's head as a political protest, the comedian's career collapsed and she received a shocking amount vitriol.

She lost her job as co-host of CNN's New Year's Eve Special with Anderson Cooper. He now hosts the show alongside Andy Cohen.

Griffin was diagnosed in 2021 with stage 1 lung carcinoma, which, she claims, didn't help matters. In the new video Griffin said, "Let's discuss PTSD." She had never spoken about it in public.

The comic went on to say, "You can laugh at me or not. I have been diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder and it is called an extreme case." She continued by saying that she would like to hear about the coping mechanisms her fans use to deal with anxiety and depression.

If you are familiar with my story, then you will know that it all began for me around five and a half years ago. Wink," she finished, saying she was eager to hear the comments.

Griffin responded that she would be trying EMDR therapy in combination with medication. She was also getting assistance from "good friend Sia" to help her on this front. Griffin responded, "She recommended a great doctor."

She also spoke about the stigma still associated with PTSD diagnosis, as "a lot people still believe[s] that it is a condition only applicable to veterans." The fan said she could not tell a doctor she had PTSD, because she would be accused of lying in order to receive disability.

Griffin released a video on Saturday morning to thank her fans and their comments. Griffin revealed that while she is "okay" today, her PTSD "attacks her in the mornings."

She said, "I wake up every morning terrified to see if everything is going to be alright or not." It's weird. The first thing that happens is my chest begins to tingle. It goes straight to my stomach, and I'm like, "Am I going to start vomiting today due anxiety?

She added a caption to the video to express her gratitude for the positive response to her previous video and to note that "this is new to me." She wrote that although her life had changed in 2017, the last year and a quarter has been filled with PTSD.

"It is funny," she continued. "I don't worry about my performance, but I am anxious about life."

The video was released after Griffin opened up in a TikTok about an 8-hour "writhing" attack she endured. She also spoke of how she used an "outdoor walk" "mid-anxiety attacks" to stave off a second attack.

She said: "I keep telling myself that it won't be forever." Then she joked about going to record some voices for "Futurama."

She said, "So everything is good." "I need to calm down the f."
