"This is America's dream!" Quan is the second Asian Best Sustained Actor Winner in Academy Awards history.
Ke Huy Quan is dominating the 2023 awards seasons for his performance in "Everything Everywhere All At Once," which won awards all over the world. He also captured hearts with his emotional acceptance speeches.
All of this led to Sunday night when Quan was awarded the highest honor in film: an Oscar.
Quan won the Best Actor in Supporting Role award at the 2023 Academy Awards Sunday. Quan had not been able to act since his days as a child star on "The Goonies" and in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." He was unable to find roles and this was Quan's first Oscar. He is the Asian Best Supporting Actor, and the second Asian in Academy Awards history.
Troy Kotsur, Ariana DeBose and Ariana deBose presented Quan with the award. Their voices broke as they read Quan's name. He received a standing ovation and was already crying when he entered the stage.
"Mom, I'm 84 years old and she's here watching." "Mom, I just won an Oscar!" Quan started. Quan said, "My journey began with a boat. I spent a year in refugee camps and ended up on Hollywood's biggest stage.
"They say stories such as this can only be told in movies. He continued, "I cannot believe it's happening." This, this is America's dream!
After expressing his gratitude to A24 and his loved ones at the Academy, 51-year old Jeff Cohen gave a heartfelt shoutout for his "Goonies" brother for life, Jeff Cohen.
"Dreams can only be achieved if you believe in them." My dreams were almost abandoned by me. Quan said, "All of you out there please keep your dreams alive," before concluding his emotional speech. "Thank you, thankyou so much for welcoming my back. You are my hero.
Oscars 2023: Jamie Lee Curtis wins her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress
Quan was awarded the award ahead of fellow male nominees Brendan Gleeson ("The Banshees of Inisherin") Brian Tyree Henry ("Causeway") Judd Hirsch ("The Fabelmans"), Barry Keoghan ("The Banshees of Inisherin") and Judd Hirsch ("The Causeway").
Quan has received many awards for his performance in "Everything Everywhere At Once" during the 2023 awards season. He won the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor In a Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture, Screen Actors Guild Award For Outstanding Performance By a Male Actor, and the Critics Choice Award Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Quan was one of the four Asian-American actors nominated for the Oscars acting categories. This is the most number of Asian acting nominees that the Academy has ever recognized in one year per Variety. Hong Chau was nominated for "The Whale", and Yeoh, who co-stars in "Everything Everywhere At Once," with Stephanie Hsu & Michelle Yeoh.
