She described her latest project as the "purest and most effective way she could have handled" the divorce.

Kelsea Ballerini turns her pain into art with a short film called "Rolling Up the Welcome Mat."

The 29-year old country music artist released a six-track EP on Tuesday to complement her heartbreaking short film. It explores her divorce from Morgan Evans.

Ballerini is seen reflecting on her divorce and her struggles to communicate with her husband.

PEOPLE shared a statement by the singer of "i quit drinking", describing the new project as the next chapter in her music. Her last album, "SUBJECT to CHANGE", was released in 2022.

"I hear a lot self-reflection when I listen to SUBJECT to CHANGE. It is filled with turmoil. Ballerini explained that this is the deep dive into the turmoil. "I wrote the majority of the project by myself, so it was good to regain my trust in myself."

Grammy Award nominee for Best Song, shared that music was always a form therapy and how songs helped her get through the most difficult times in her life.

Since I was 12, writing about my life has been the only way I have been able handle it. Ironically, my parents divorced me and I began writing music. That was my therapy, she said.

These are six songs that I wish I'd had last year. Kelsea said that it's about the complexity of emotions you experience during a large shift in your young years. "Rolling up the Welcome Mat was my way of processing everything. It was the only way I processed my emotions and put them into music.

"Rolling Up The Welcome Mat" is full of lyrics that refer to Evans' split. The song "Mountain with a View", which opens the album, gives insight into Evans's breakup.

Ballerini sings the chorus, "I'm still wearing the ring / But... I think I'm lying" "I realized that you loved me more at 23 / This is when it's over," Ballerini sings in the chorus.

Kelsea sings "Interlude", a diary-entry-like song about how the public finds out about their divorce and the discussion surrounding it.

The lyrics read, "There's a thin boundary between love and hatred / And it was Love, but it wasn’t fate." "Rumors are going 'round but the truth is kinda nuanced/ I want to set it straight but my lawyer tells me not to."

Evans and Ballerini were married in December 2017. Evans was 24 years old at the time. In August 2022 she announced her divorce news, calling it "difficult" and referring to the "result of a journey of love. She said, "It's difficult to find the right words here...but it's extremely grateful for the many years of marriage to Morgan, and hopeful for what the next seasons will bring."

The divorce was finalized by the former couple on November 15, 2022.
