In a recent interview with people, the scandal alumna revealed that she had an abortion. Washington admitted she was torn about whether or not to include this story in her new book. However, she said it was "really" important to tell.
Washington said to the magazine that she struggled at first with whether to include her abortion story. "At the beginning, I was not sure if it would fit in this story about my life. "It was important to me that I share this."
Washington's unplanned pregnancy was revealed in Her memoir. It happened at a young age in Washington's career, shortly after the success Save the Last Dance and her leading role in Spike Lee’s 2003 drama She hate Me.
The outlet reports that after a sexual encounter with a man in her 20s she decided to end the pregnancy.
Washington, who had spent years in her teens as a sexual education educator, admitted to feeling shame and hypocrisy while speaking with nurses during the procedure.
She explained that she wanted to lessen the stigma associated with the word "abortion" by rewriting the story.
Washington said, "It is important to me that the word abortion does not have a negative connotation and that my abortion doesn't add another thing to my list of things I am ashamed of."
The longtime actress believes that this is a particularly important issue at a time when women's reproductive rights are being eroded in the United States, as states such as Texas and Alabama have banned the procedure almost completely.
She added, "We are at a time when it is really important that we tell the truth about our choices in reproductive health because some of these choices will be taken away from us."
Washington, who has two daughters, Isabelle, 9 and Caleb 6, along with a teenage stepson, whom she shares Nnamdi Asomugha. She said that she did not want to leave anyone thinking there was "shame" in having an abortion.
Washington said, "I am telling the truth about my past and revealing some of my secrets." I don't think anyone should feel ashamed of their choice if Washington doesn't tell them.
The release date of Kerry Washington's Thicker Than Water: A Memoir has been set for September 26.
