'Killer Nurse' Lucy Letby Refuses to Face Families of Babies She Murdered

The UK's harshest sentence was handed out to Britain's most prolific infant killer, who refused to appear in court before the victims' families.

Lucy Letby, a former neonatal nursing who killed at least seven babies and attempted to kill half a dozen others was sentenced on Monday to life imprisonment.

In court, the most prolific child killer in recent UK History refused to confront the parents who had lost their children. They expressed their anger and grief through impact statements. She did not attend her own sentencing. The maximum sentence under British law is a lifetime term, and there is no death penalty.

It is rare to find the "whole-life order" in the UK.

"I'm not sure we will ever be able to get over the fact our daughter was tortured until she had no fighting left in her. Everything she suffered over her short lifetime was done deliberately by someone who should have protected her and helped her return home."

Justice James Goss stated that your actions were characterized by a malice bordering on sadism. "Throughout this trial, you have denied your guilt. You show no remorse. "There are no mitigating circumstances."

Letby committed crimes between 2015 and 2016 in the neonatal ward of Countess of Chester Hospital, Chester, England.

Families were angry at the killer's absence. British courts allow criminals not to attend their own sentencing. They wanted to tell the killer about the destruction she caused.

The mother of twins, who had tried to kill the other Letby, said, "You thought you were entitled to play God with the lives of our children."

It's cowardly for people to commit such horrific crimes and not confront their victims, and hear from them first-hand how their crimes affected their victims and their loved ones.

In a court statement, the mother of the girl in question, called Child I, stated that she would never be able to forget the torture she endured. She also said that the person who was supposed protect her, and help her return home, did everything they could.

Prime Minister Rishi sunak said, "It is cowardly for people to commit such horrific crimes and not meet their victims in person and hear the impact of their crimes on them, their families and loved-ones."

The court heard that Letby began working at the hospital in 2015, when there was an increase in infant deaths.

Some of these babies had "catastrophic collapsing" but survived thanks to the other medical staff at the hospital.

Letby was present in all of these cases. The prosecution described her as "a constant malevolent presence" within the neonatal unit.

The motive of the'sinister' nurse who murdered 7 babies in a Neonatal Ward is unknown

In an interview conducted with Letby in November 2020, she and the investigator explained the reasons why she photographed the sympathy letter that she sent to the parents of one her infant victims. The letter of condolence was sent just a few days after the infant had died in 2015. (In the trial, the child is referred to as Child I). This occurred after three attempts to kill the baby.

The nurse said, "It was nice to think about the kind words I shared with the family," at the time.

The court was shown a sympathy card with the title "Your loved one will always be remembered as a person who made you smile."

The note started with "There are no easy words to help you through this difficult time." It was an honor to take care of [Child 1] and to get to know your family, a family that always put [Child 1] first and who did all they could for her. She will be a part of your life forever and we won't forget her.

"Thinking about you today and forever." Letby signed off the note with "Lots of love Lucy x" and expressed regret for not being able attend the funeral.

During the trial the jury was told that Post-Its had been found in Letby's home. These notes contained mixed messages regarding the murders. She wrote: "I'm a terrible evil person... I am evil, I did this"; "I do not deserve to live." I killed them deliberately because I wasn't good enough to take care of them", while other messages claimed she was innocent.

Letby said in May that she did not intend to harm anyone while working on the neonatal unit.
