"It's not all the good that sticks out, it's the one thing that really sticks out to me always.
Kirsten Dunst was a comedian queen in the late 1990s thanks to films such as "Bring It On," Drop Dead Gorgeous", and "Dick" -- however, not all of her peers appreciated those films.
The actress spoke with The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast and discussed how she transitioned from teen movies to more dramatic roles, as well as her plans to focus on negative criticisms of her work despite its success.
Dunst stated, "During that age I was wanting to take myself seriously too." "I actually remember another actress saying something. She said, "Well, I'm in no dumb cheerleader movie." I felt so bad about myself after hearing that.
She continued, "It's funny how one thing can really -- not all of the positive that sticks out. It's only the one bad thing that really sticks to you always." Sofia Coppola, director of 'The Virgin Suicides,' always said that "Don't read any book because the one thing you don't like will stick in your head."
Dunst said that she was "a little embarrassed" by the success of the film, and would repeat lines like "I'll get Tor the door!" She said it to herself in real life after the film was released.
"I was in highschool, so I was kinda, I was the one in high school who kept her head down because I didn’t want anyone to pick out me as an actress. She said that she was very downplaying herself in high school. "I felt anxious at school because I didn't want to be judged for anything. I just wanted to feel normal.
Dunst stated that everyone was surprised by the success of the movie.
It just shows that you never know what will resonate and hit people. I had no idea," she explained. She explained that she doesn't have this perspective while making the film or watching it. It was fun to watch, and my brother said, "This is going to be big!" I was like, "Really Christian?" I was like, "Really Christian?" He was like, "Yes!"
Dunst's interview falls in the midst of her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress. This is in recognition of Jane Campion's film "The Power of the Dog." Jesse Plemons, her real-life partner, stars in the film. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
They'll find out if they win when the awards show on Sunday, March 27, at ABC.
