It wasn't a show. Gaga wrote in a heartfelt post about the legend, "Our relationship was very real."
Lady Gaga pays emotional tribute to her "true friend" Tony Bennett.
The singer-songwriter posted a photo of herself hugging Bennett in an dressing room on Instagram on Monday to mourn the death of her longtime partner who died recently on July 21, at the age 96.
"I will always miss my friend." Gaga said, "I will miss singing, recording, talking, and being on stage with him. "With Tony I was able to live in a time-warp. Tony & I shared a magical power. We took ourselves back in time, modernized music, and gave it a new sound as a duo. It wasn't a show. "Our relationship was real."
The musician continued to say that Bennett was not only her friend but also a mentor to her - teaching about "music [and] showbiz life" and how to "keep my spirit high and my mind screwed on right."
"'Straight ahead,' he'd say. He was an optimistic man who believed in both quality work and quality life. Gaga explained that his many achievements left him feeling "grateful."
"Plus, there's the gratitude...Tony always showed his gratitude." She said that he served in WWII and marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr. He also sang jazz with some of the best singers and musicians in the world.
"I have been mourning Tony's loss for a very long time. We said a long and moving goodbye. He was my friend, even though there were five decades between us. My real true friend," Gaga wrote. Our age difference did not matter - it actually gave us both something we didn't have with most people. "We were two people from different life stages who were completely inspired."
Later, the star actress spoke about Bennett's death and said that "Losing Tony due to Alzheimer's was painful but also really beautiful."
"A period of memory loss can be a very sacred time in someone's life." She explained that all she wanted was for Tony remember how much she loved him and was grateful to have him as part of her life. As that faded, I knew he was sharing the most vulnerable moment of his life with me -- singing with me as his nature changed so profoundly.
"I'll always remember this experience." I'll never forget Tony Bennett. Gaga added, "If I could tell the world anything about this, I would tell them to not discount their elders and don't let them fall behind when times change. Don't be afraid to keep moving forward, even if you are sad. You will learn a lot from your elders if you take care of them. "Maybe even magical."
She concluded with "I love Tony." Love, Lady."
Bennett's Alzheimer diagnosis was made public in 2021. However, it didn't stop him from continuing to produce quality music and perform live. Bennett and Gaga have been friends for over a decade. Their most recent collaboration was the 2021 album Love For Sale, which won a Grammy award in 2022.
Gaga sang the album's title track at the Grammys the same year. She cried as she said "I love Tony, we missed you" after the showman had introduced her performance via video.
