Bass says, "We were rich but not famous," before describing how the finances were mismanaged.
Contrary to popular opinion, Lance Bass didn't make a lot of money during his NSYNC years.
During a SiriusXM "The Jess Cagle Show" appearance, the 43-year old NSYNC alum reflected on his time with the iconic '90s Boy Band and debunked some common misconceptions regarding life as a superstar.
When asked what it was like to be "rich and famous young", Bass said he didn't have the money that many people would like to think he had.
He laughed. "Well, I think the worst is that people believe we are rich. We're not," he said. "We were rich, but not famous." "I made more money after NSYNC that I did while NSYNC."
Lou Pearlman was sued in 2008 by members of NSYNC, as well as Backstreet Boys and other groups. Pearlman was notorious for perpetuating one of America's largest Ponzi schemes. He was convicted of fraud and died in prison in August 2016 at the age of 62.
The singer said that Pearlman "took a majority" of their stuff and made "horrible, horrible deals".
Bass recalled the craziness of his NSYNC days, which included Chris Kirkpatrick and JC Chasez. Justin Timberlake, Joe Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick were also in his band.
The "Love Wrecked' star said that the other guys kept him sane and grounded throughout the journey.
It was an incredible experience to do this with these guys. You had some of your best experiences. It changed my life and led me to many of the things I wanted to achieve in life. They're incredible, amazing guys," he exclaimed, adding that they had formed a "great system of support."
"I'm so glad I was in band, because my four brothers kept me grounded. They would slap you if you said something off-the-wall. But if you're a solo artist, you're always like, 'Yes, yes, yes.' You are the boss. Bass clarified, "That's all." You get the Michael Jackson syndrome, where you don't know what reality is. We were brought back to reality by the group.
