In "Honey, Baby, Mine", the new memoir by her and her mother, the Oscar-winning actress wrote, "I became closer with my mother than ever before."
Laura Dern opens up about her relationship with her mother Diane Ladd after she was diagnosed with life-threatening cancer.
According to People, in 2018, Ladd suffered from a lung condition called idiopathicpulmonary fibrosis. A doctor told her that she only had six months left to live.
Dern and Ladd’s new memoir, “Honey, Baby, Mine,” recounts how the former and her mother began walking together to increase her lung capacity. Their in-depth discussions became the inspiration for the book.
Dern told her mother that after Ladd's life expectancy was reduced to a few weeks, they should not "leave anything unsaid".
"Mom, I think it's about time we shared everything." We should get to know eachother better. "Let's walk tomorrow and every day thereafter until you are better," wrote she in her memoir, according to Fox News. I will record our conversations and we will always have our story -- saved on the recordings, committed to paper.
The actress said, "These walks could be our last moments together." "The only thing I can do to cope with my fear that she will die is to make sure we discuss everything and leave nothing out."
Dern said that as they continued their walks together, her mother opened up to her about difficult times in her own life. These included Ladd's separation from Bruce Dern, Dern's dad, and the tragic death of their 18-month-old child.
Dern said, "In the months following, we discussed happy memories and old hurts - some of which were healed as a direct result of our conversations." "I became more close to my mother than ever before." "I learned things about my mother that I had never known before and discovered another side of stories from my childhood."
She wrote later, "I thought all this talking and remembering was for my mother, to give peace and strength to her in her last months or years, and to let me know how she had shaped me, and how grateful I am for her example." But I would learn that spending time with my mother was also a gift to me.
Ladd has recovered since her diagnosis. Dern shared on "TODAY", earlier this week, that her mother "made two films, [done] an TV show, and wrote a novel" in just four years.
Fox News reported that Ladd, while promoting her memoir at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books with her daughter last week, said she "choosed to live." She also praised the daughter she called "angel."
"Honey, Baby, Mine": A mother and daughter discuss life, death, love (and banana pudding) is available now.
