Lena Dunham Celebrates Five Years of Sobriety: 'Happiest of My Time on Earth'

All of this was unimaginable five years ago. Five days were impossible to imagine. 5 minutes sometimes felt hard"

Lena Dunham celebrates her fifth "sober" birthday.

The 36-year old "Girls” alum celebrated the occasion by posting an Instagram post that described her journey to sobriety, and how it changed her life.

Dunham, along with a photo collage of selfies, recalled "trembling as a little child" when she entered rehab to treat her substance abuse. Her parents then hugged her farewell. She stated that she was addicted to Klonopin and benzodiazepines in 2018.

She admitted that she was struggling with addiction "little by little" and then "all at once." The Golden Globe winner said she felt it was difficult to ask for help.

Dunham stated that, "It was all easy, except for the hard parts," but that each step got easier. "And ease was always my goal- ease in myself, ease in my mind, and the ability to exist in times of pain, anxiety, and uncertainty without looking for a solution that would help me in that moment, but pull me away from the people and life I want."

She called her five last years of sobriety the "happiest of all my time on Earth so far"

They've been filled with love, work, complexity, and yes, pain. She said that facing all of this without resorting to unhealthy medication has given her a solid foundation and new tools. All of this was unimaginable five years ago. Five days were impossible to imagine. 5 minutes sometimes felt hard."

She said, "I was able get and keep sober because of the support and resources I had to ask for and receive incredible help - spiritual, medical, and other. Many people don't know that the difference between being sober or using is their willingness to use, their strength, or their resources. It's not possible to have a system that allows those already struggling to make their lives better.

Celebrating her five-year journey, the "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” star announced that she would match donations to Friendly House. Friendly House is a rehabilitation facility that she claims "doesn’t turn away women and gender nonconforming people for financial reasons."

She concluded, "There are many people who deserve to be thanked here - I hope they've received enough face to face, but today serves as a reminder to give more." Every day is a lesson that I have been blessed to learn and I don’t take it for granted. Today, I am thankful.

Dunham's celebrities friends came together to leave comments and praise her achievements.

Sarah Silverman wrote, "So proud of your kid."

Selma Blair exclaimed, "Lena is the great." "I am so happy. In admiration. It is a great place to be. It's beautiful!

Rita Wilson, actress of "Sleepless In Seattle", celebrated Dunham's birthday and wrote "Happy sober Birthday, Lena" while Rumer Wilis wrote "I love and I'm so proud"
