Saturday Night Live reveals the dark segment that she and Kenan Thomson wrote, which would have seen The View's moderator being shot by Colin Jost live on air on "Weekend Update", in an excerpt of her new memoir Leslie F*king Jones.
Leslie Jones opens up about her career and life in the new book, Leslie F*cking Jones. This includes a very dark "Weekend Update," segment that she and Kenan Thomson tried to air on Saturday Night Live, with The View moderator Whoopi Goldenberg.
Goldberg has appeared on SNL a lot over the years with different impressions including Jones and Thompson. They were the best choice to pen what could have possibly been her last song at this late-night staple.
Jones reveals that Saturday Night Live is reportedly eyeing a possible comeback this month, now that the WGA strikes are over. She also reveals that a segment of "Weekend Update," which had Jones cracking up, was vetoed Lorne Mikels.
The joke didn't make her or Thompson laugh, but it made them. It could be because they both played Goldberg in the show. It could have been that it was too dark.
Jones shared a section from her book via Entertainment Weekly. In it, she revealed that the real Goldberg would have appeared on "Weekend Update", with co-hosts Colin Jostand Michaelche. But they didn't buy it.
Jones wrote: "In the sketches, Colin would say 'Leslie I know you', and Whoopi would reply 'No no, Leslie plays me but I'm actually me. I'm Really Whoopi'."
"Colin says, "Yeah. Yeah. What would happen if i did this? The excerpt continues: "and pulls out the gun." "Whoopi seems terrified. "Yo, No, Seriously, I am Whoopi Goldberg. I am not Leslie. I'm Whoopi. Colin looks at her and doesn't believe it. He says "Oh yeah ...' Then shoots her."
Jones and Thompson cut the show to different shots of Michaels playing golf or taking a bath as part of an "We'll Be Right Back" interstitial. These shots were spliced in with the chaos onscreen.
Jones wrote: "Kenan was laughing and I was weeping when we wrote it." We were going to film Whoopi Goldberg for SNL!
She said that only Thompson and she were the only ones laughing when they pitched it to Bryan Tucker, then-head writer of "Update", but no one else joined in.
Jones wrote: "In the office of 'Update,' we were acting out the Whoopi sketch and laughing the entire time." Kenan told me, "It is so funny." Right?'"
Someone said, "You guys are nuts." She continued, "'You can't murder Whoopi Goldberg live on TV'". "She is not dead!" "She's not dead!" I shouted. "She just got shot.
They took Michaels' idea, but things didn't turn out much better. Jones laughs at Michaels' response, even though it was cut. He insists that Michaels "completely missed the point."
She wrote that he said, "We won't kill Whoopi on national television for a joke." She said that the joke was not "personal," but rather "just funny." We never did it."
It's the thrill of a book like The F*cking Jones. We know that there are many sketch ideas which never make it on to Saturday Night Live. We love when the cast members share their ideas with us in interviews or in books.
Yes, it's dark. It could have been funny too!
