M3GAN's Allison Williams and Director on 'Instantly Iconic' Dance Number (Exclusive)

"I thought it was one those ideas that you have when you don't get enough sleep."

M3GAN, the Model 3 Generative android, broke the internet in just five seconds by dancing in a trailer. In her latest horror film, she does more -- including breaking skin and bones.

The movie stars Allison Williams, who is best known for her roles in "Girls", and "Get Out." It centers on a genius tech wizard who creates robotic toys that can do almost anything. This doll, which is life-sized, can help raise children, teach TikTok dance moves, and even kill you with a nailgun.

In one famous moment, she combines her love of dancing and murder. Gerard Johnstone, the director, says that he "just kinda snuck" into film "to see what anyone would say." It was well received and became a Twitter icon.

He told TooFab that everyone accepted it, "to their credit," he said ahead of the film's release. It was an idea you have when you don't get enough sleep. This was the kind of fun that we needed.

He said that "But you're certainly walking a fine line when it comes to doing something like this and you just hope that it's going to pay off" and that the online response to that moment was particularly surprising. It's amazing to see that people love the movie even in the trailer. That was so gratifying.

Williams, who insists that she could not do the choreography for even a second, added "Iconic."

Let's squash this immediately. If someone said, "Everyone you love has been at gunpoint. Do this dance," I would be like, "I'm sorry guys. It would take me months." She continued, saying that it was amazing and that she was "awestruck" at that moment in each stage of her development.

"Reading the script, you feel like you can't imagine it but I think it's possible to picture it. Then, talking to Gerard about it and getting his vision and tone, you feel like this is starting to make sense to me," she said. It's instantly iconic to watch it being performed, and then to finally see it on the screen. It's so exciting to see it in full theater. I can't wait for people to react to it."

M3GAN was a meme queen from the moment the trailer dropped in October. People turned many clips into GIFs and set them to popular songs. They even created Halloween costumes months before the film's release. Jason Blum, the producer of the film, was among the many to dress up as M3GAN for the December premiere in Hollywood.

Allison described the warm reception to the doll as a "absolute delight". We're launching her into this world. I hope people will get it. Then, two seconds later, we're seeing people put it to Beyonce and people dress up as her for Halloween. This was beyond our wildest expectations. It made me happy to scroll through the pages and see M3GAN costumes. It's amazing!

It is clear that the movie knows what it is, and they have a lot of fun with their absurd premise. Johnstone said that he didn't feel like he needed to control himself at all. TooFab told Johnstone that they just went for it and never thought they would go too deep. There are two musical moments in the routine. One is when M3GAN sings a new song to her child companion, and the other where she breaks into a song that most of the audience will recognize.

It's not what you expected. "I have played a character in 'Girls,' which broke into song at unwelcome moments to uncomfortable giggles. I really look forward to seeing Megan do it instead," Williams said before Johnstone explained the reasoning behind the original song.

He explained that he remembered wanting it to feel like she was. We couldn't say it because it would violate copyright. But in my mind, she has an algorithm that blends like Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, and Burt Bacharach into one song for this magical, Disney-esque track.

The composer had only been on the film for two weeks and it was difficult work. We were like, "We're shooting this now." He said that we were going to have her lip sync to nothing, and then he realized that it was better to have this prepared. We worked hard, very quickly, and refined it later. We didn't have vocals so I had to record it and play it back as a chipmunk.

Williams' character does learn to be more open-minded about tech, but the actress admitted that working on the film definitely changed her perspective. It means that I look at a smart device alone like I see it. You see me. She said, "You see me and you see me." "I am not alone.

Nevertheless, she would be willing to face the android in another film.

She said, "Oh my goodness, I would be thrilled." "Any version that allows us to just keep pulling on the strings of the dynamic between them all and push it to the extreme, that's always going be fun.

Johnstone said, "There are so many things you can do." "The challenge with a sequel is to give people what they want, but in a way that's surprising. I believe that this would be the most important thing. To keep it surprising and relevant. It's something I cannot speak about, but it is something I really hope happens. It would be great fun to see it happen."

"M3GAN," dances in theaters on January 6.
