Their friendship was broken after they competed together in DWTS -- apparently over Scientology or Ukraine.

After Kirstie Alley's death, Maksim Chmerkovskiy paid tribute.

They competed together in Season 12 of the show, where they placed second. Then, they were reunited to compete for the all-stars series the next year. They were eliminated seventh in their second attempt.

Following news that Alley had lost her battle with colon cancer, Maksim posted, "My dearest Kirstie. We haven’t spoken in a while and I’ll tell you all when I finally meet you. But for now, I just want to tell you how much I love you and wish you the best of rest." She was 71 years old.

He said, "You were one the most special people I have ever known and one of the brightest moments in my professional and personal life." Our relationship is well documented. It is only a few who know the truth. It was like riding a wild rollercoaster.

"From Maude, to DJ Lil Buttercup, you were always in for the long haul. As I type this, my memories of our time together rush into my head. I recall how wild you were, and it makes me cry. He added, "Something you'd absolutely hate." "And now, I can't help smiling because I remember exactly what you wanted me say at your funeral. "Don't think that I can do this here."

He said, "I thought that you would be here forever." We should have spoken more often. We are so grateful for all you do. I love you Kirstie Alley. RIP."

2014: Chmerkovskiy spoke out to Andy Cohen on "Watch What Happens Live" about his relationship with Alley. He claimed that Scientology was responsible for the tension between them.

"We had a great friendship... but I received a message now saying that I am associating myself with other people she can't associate with, I am not to be spoken to anymore, and I am sorry but it is what is," he stated, probably referring to his ex-Scientologist Leah Remini.

"I'm Jewish. He said that he didn't believe in science fiction but that he did. "It's hard that we have been through so much together. I feel like I've helped my wife. This is where we are now. However, I believe she is a wonderful person and wish her all the best.

Alley replied to the incident on Twitter and wrote, "Dear Sir..after ass raped you there is really not reason to include I wish you all the best'." It's rhetorical."

When asked about the problem, he later stated that Science happened.

He clarified, "You can thank [my friendship] Leah Reminifor that." A note was sent to me by a friend stating that I was "disconnected", as in, Kirstie is not allowed to be my friend anymore. It is absurd for an adult human being "disconnect" from another person. Everyone is entitled to their own insaneness.

After Alley tweeted about the conflict, Maksim and Remini got in touch via social media.

Alley's children, True and Lillie Parker, confirmed her death Monday via social media.

They wrote, "To all our friends far and wide around world... We are sorry to inform you that our incredible and fierce mother, just recently discovered, has died after a long battle with cancer."

The pair said that she was surrounded by her family and fought with great courage, leaving them with the certainty of her unending joy of living and all the adventures ahead. She was as iconic on screen as she was in real life, but she was a mother and grandmother that was even more remarkable.

Alley's children added that they are "grateful for the incredible team of physicians and nurses at Moffitt cancer Center for their care." Alley's children stated that their mother's "zest for life, her grandchildren, and her many animals, as well as her endless joy of creating were unsurpassed and leave them inspired to live life to its fullest, just like she did."

The statement concluded, "We thank you all for your love and prayers"
