Maria Shriver, who was celebrating her 66 th birthday earlier in the year, had an insight about her mother's death and the prospect of growing older. Instead of grieving the passing of years, she looked forward to the possibilities for the future and reflected on how happy and hopeful she was.
She was able to cope with the loss of her mother by aging
Shriver was moved to share her thoughts in Oprah Insider. She shared how she changed her perspective from seeing aging as a loss to one that is a gift.
Shriver expressed her new view by saying that it was the first time since my 20s that I felt joy and hope for the future rather than sadness at losing my youth.

She said that her mother's death was likened to the loss of our pasts as we age. "What I have realized is that the more comfortable that I can be with my grief, the better." She said about the loss of her mother: "It has helped me understand grief just little better. This helps me face all kinds losses, people I love, opportunities that pass, old identities that used serve me, and it gives me more strength and even a sense if wonder."
Shriver shared what she learned, and how she's using it to change the narrative of aging in America. Here are some ways Shriver is doing that and how you can do it, as well.
Rewriting the Narrative about Aging
Stop using the term "anti-aging." Shriver advised us to stop trying to make ourselves look younger and instead to be happy with who we are. " The old story about aging - how we should "fix" ourselves, or do everything we can to look like we did in our 20s and 30s - needs to be rewritten.
Make the most of your extra time. Shriver inspired us all to make the most of our extra time.
Consider aging as a gift and not something to be afraid of Shriver reminded that we shouldn't let age stop us from trying new things and taking risks. I believe that aging is a gift if you are open to new ideas, keep your eyes open, and don't let the number on the birthday cake stop you from saying yes.

It is important to remember that the way you view aging can have an impact on how others see it. Shriver reminded us all to change the way others view aging. " The way I see it is that we have two options: we can grieve the loss in our youth and encourage our young people to feel sad, or we can change how we view aging so that it ignites excitement for the future.
