"My family has always been a fan of initiations and rites-of-passage."

Matthew McConaughey just confirmed that his mother Mary Kathleen McCabe tested his now wife Camila Alvarez as soon as they began dating.

The actor addressed these comments in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada.

McConaughey said, "My family believes in rites and initiations. You don't just walk into the McConaughey household."

"We test you. "We test you."

McConaughey continued, "Oh, my Family, we wait humbly, we make you weep, and then, we pick you up, and make your favourite drink, 'You are welcome back.'" "There are always rites of initiation that my family has enjoyed."

Camila revealed this initiation in an episode of Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam Podcast.

The model revealed that she was "tested" by Matthew McCabe's mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, AKA Kay, AKA Ma Mac, at the start of their relationship. She also explained how she managed to win her mother-in law's approval.

She did all of these things as soon as I entered the picture. She was testing me. "I mean, was really testing me," Camilla said. "She called me all the names of Matthew's former girlfriends. She would speak Spanish to me in an extremely broken way. It was a little demeaning. "I mean, I'm talking about all sorts of stuff."

Ma Mac was invited to accompany her to Istanbul for a modeling gig. The trip included first-class air travel. The trip did not go as planned.

Camilla remembered: "She told me stories the entire way, on the plane to Istanbul. She put all of these things into my head." "Enough so that when we landed I was like 'OK alright. Let me buckle up. "Let me prepare for this situation.

"Then, on day three, as I was taking her into her room, she started crying and it wasn't my place to tell her. You know, "Ma Mac!" "I'm so sorry," she added. As I was putting her to sleep, I looked at her and thought, "Oh my god." She's full s---."

Camilla continued, "I just flipped it on her, bringing my spicy Brazilian and Latin side and let her have it." "So, I went at her again, and we had a back-and-forth, back-and forth. Then, at the end, I just saw her look at me and say, "OK." "Now you're in."

She acknowledged that it was a test and noted that "all Ma Mac wanted for me was to fight back."

Camilla said, "And from that night forward, we [have] had the most amazing relationship." "I have such respect for her." She has such a great deal of respect for me.

She said, many years later that although things "can get tricky at times," she and mother-in law "always finish with a good joke and a laugh."

Camila and Matthew met in 2006. They married in 2012. The couple has three children, Levi, Vida, and Livingston.

Camila stated that her husband and mother in law are "very alike in many ways."

When we started dating, there was an image of Matthew that was laid-back, high and without a shirt. The guy doesn't smoke, I thought. "Where is this vision from?" She explained. "He is actually the opposite and he is like his mother. She is very organized, minimalistic, on time and prepared. He gets many of these traits from her.
