Matthew Perry, alum of the hit TV show "Friends", has come under fire for passages in his memoir where he laments "the loss of original thinkers such as River Phoenix and Heath Ledger", while Keanu Reeves is "still walking among us."
Matthew Perry admitted that his actions were "stupid", "mean" and "unkind", according to the Los Angeles Times. He intends on making amends in future editions "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," which is his best-selling memoir.
Perry's book chronicles his struggle with addiction and his time as a star on "Friends". He was immediately criticized for a comment he made that was insensitive. It wasn't just one instance, either. He made the same comment twice.
Perry could not explain why he lamented the loss of "originals thinkers" like Chris Farley, Heath Ledger and River Phoenix. He made this statement in contrast to Keanu Reeves who "still walks with us." He also called the two former actors "the really talented men."
Perry apologized for the initial reaction and stated that he had chosen "a random nickname." Perry said that he should have used his name. He explained that he chose Reeves as a result of the fact that they both live on the street.
He acknowledged that he had said something stupid in the book. It was an unfair thing to say.
He then went on to say that he had publicly apologized to Reeves. But he also went a step farther, saying, "Any future editions of the book won't have his name in them."
He admitted that he had not personally apologized to Reeves. He said, "If I see him again I will apologize." "It was stupid."
Reeves, for his part, reportedly thought that the comments were "out of left-field," according to Us Weekly. He added that it had a kind of backfired, since he was forced to quickly apologize.
Perry also acknowledged, during his festival appearance, the lack of diversity in "Friends," one of the many reasons why there has been a backlash towards the smash hit NBC series over the past few years -- even though it is still a streaming juggernaut.
Perry said that the show ran from 1994 until 2004. "Nobody spoke about diversity."
He acknowledged, however, that "diversity" is a major issue. It's right to do."
