Ryan also directs and co-writes the film, which marks her return to romantic comedy and her first movie since eight years.
Meg Ryanis returning -- and she's doing it in the genre which launched her career.
Bleeker Street released the trailer for What happens Later, on Wednesday. This marks Ryan's eagerly anticipated return to romantic comedies. The film stars the actress, who also directed it. She is joined by David Duchovny.
According to Bleeker St, the rom-com synopsis reads as follows: "Two former lovers, Bill and Willa, (David Duchovny), get stuck at a regional Airport overnight. Willa (a magical thinker) and Bill (a catastrophic one), who are both indefinitely delayed, find that they still feel the same attraction and irritation towards each other as they did years ago. As they unravel the mystery of their shared past and compare the lives they lead to their dreams, they start to wonder whether their reunion was a mere coincidence or something more magical.
Ryan is not only the star of the film, but also the director. She co-wrote it with Kik Lynn and Steven Dietz who wrote the Shooting Star on which the movie was based. What happens later was produced by Jonathan Duffy and Kelly Williams.
Ryan, 61 years old, revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly conducted before the strike by SAG-AFTRA that the film was inspired by Nora Ephron. Ryan starred in three Ephron movies, When Harry met Sally (1989), Sleepless In Seattle(1993), and You Got Mail (2000).
"Sometimes, there is a question: Will they stay together? Will they be together? "For that reason, [ What Happens Later] evolves the genre of rom-com just a bit," she said to EW. It's about old people and still romantic and sexy."
She added, "It's a film that has some similarities to films from the 1940s, such as Bringing Up Baby in terms of banter, rhythm, and many other aspects of that period of filmmaking." Nora Ephron said that rom-coms were a great way to express the times. We do this in our movie.
What happens later marks Ryan's return in rom-coms. It is also her first role as an actress in eight years. This is her second time as a director. Her directorial debut was with the 2015 movie Ithaca.
