After returning home, they found them still processing the scene, the father of the girl committed suicide.
Arabella McCormack, 11 years old, was adopted by her grandparents and is currently in jail. They are facing charges for the death of the child.
Leticia McCormack (49-year-old leader at Rock Church in San Diego) and Stanley Tom (75) were booked into San Diego Central Jail on murder charges. They also face three counts each of torture and three counts willful and cruel cruelty to children. Adella Tom, Leticia's 70-year old grandmother, is also facing three counts of torture.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies had previously reached out to Arabella's adoptive dad, Brian. He "committed suicide while they were present" after making contact in August. According to The San Diego Union-Tribune he killed himself in his pickup truck after returning home to find detectives on the scene. Brian reportedly worked for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection as a border protection agent.
According to The Times of San Diego on Wednesday, they pleaded not guilty. They will be appearing in court again later in the month.
After authorities received a distress call at 2am on August 30, Arabella's death was investigated. "During the investigation detectives suspected signs child abuse," stated SDCSD in press release. They also said that Arabella's health had "declined" and that she "died" at a hospital. According to a police spokesperson, the child had "severe signs of malnourishment and signs of bleeding."
The McCormacks adopted Arabella's seven-year-old and seven-year old sisters in 2017. Both are currently living with a foster parent.
After McCormacks' arrest, the biological mother of all three daughters spoke out to NBC San Diego. She said she felt that she was finally getting justice for her daughter. She said that Letitia deserves the death penalty. My daughter was given the death penalty by her mother. She gave my daughter the death penalty.
Rock Church, in a statement to NBC San Diego also reacted the Leticia's arrest and the parents of Leticia, while showing support for Arabella, her sisters, and distancing itself from the suspects.
"We continue to mourn for Arabella, her sisters. We are sorry for the pain and loss that their loved ones are going through. All those who are grieving send their deepest condolences. The organization said that their hearts are with each one.
"The legal process will proceed and we hope justice will be done for Arabella and her sister. It continued, "We are praying that God’s love and grace will bring healing and comfort." Leticia is no longer a part of the Rock's official relationship. Her ordination at Rock Church was previously suspended, and it is currently being revoked."
