The latest episode of Meghan Markle's podcast featured a surprise appearance from Doria Ragland, her mother. Even though Ragland's appearance was accidental, it was appropriate given the episode's subject matter.
The latest Archetypes was called "Good Wife/Bad Wife and Good Mom/Bad Mom" and focused on society's expectations of women to be perfect parents and partners. Ragland called Markle and immediately took Markle back to her childhood.
'Hey Mommy'
The podcast episode was being recorded when the duchess received a call from Ragland, her mother. Markle interrupted her interview when Ragland called her via Facetime. "All right. "So the first one you said is:--oh sugar! My mom's FaceTiming Me," Markle shares. "Hey, Mommy!"
Ragland started the call by asking Markle what she was doing. The duchess replied that she was recording. Ragland confirmed Ragland's suspicions that Markle was recording as Markle smiled.
A sweet mother-daughter moment concluded with Ragland reminding Markle about their plans to meet up over the weekend.

After the sweet moment, Markle, Duchess of Sussex, made a comment about what her mom did during the call. Markle admitted that her mom did this.
You may have heard her clicking sound. "My mom pulled out a reference to what I had come up with for a cool handshake when I was eight. It was snap, scissors cut, chicken wings," she said. She's 41 and she's like "Okay, that's great!"
My mom 'Supported me...And The House And Herself.
The duchess reflected on the experience of being interrupted by her mother as she returned to the interview. She remarked, "It just put my right back in the past."
"Thinking back to my childhood, our little quirks... then, with this episode in my brain, it got my thinking about all of the ways my mom supported and took care me and my house...and how she just juggled everything."
Markle continued, "The amount of women carrying, that they navigate, it's enormous." It's often the most unpaid, thankless labor. There is no union. There is no lunch break. It's impossible to find anything like it."
"Women work hard at home. A lot of that work comes from necessity. However, a lot of it is also born out of expectations. The idea that we must fit into the cookie-cutter shape the world demands of us.
Markle, throughout the episode, reflected on how many women are overweight as mothers and wives. Society expects women to care for their children and homes. Women must take care of themselves and work outside the home.
Markle hopes that women will "break away from what's expected [of them]". This is just one lesson Markle learned from her mom.
