"It's gettin' tougher. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the actor confesses that "Every day it gets tougher."
Michael J. Michael J. Fox opens up about his Parkinson's Disease battle.
In a preview of an upcoming appearance, the actor shared that his battle with the disorder is becoming "harder" as well as "tougher," adding that he does not believe that he will live to 80.
Fox told Jane Pauley that he was "set up" to "pack Parkinson's with me" if necessary. Pauley had asked Fox if Parkinson's would "make the decision" at some point for the "Back to the Future' star.
Fox responded, "Yes, there's a knock on the door," adding "I'm not going to lie." It's gettin' hard, it's gettin' harder. It's gettin' tougher. "Every day, it gets tougher."
He said, "That's just the way it is." "I mean, I don't know, who should I talk to about that?" ..."
The "Teen Wolf' star then recalled undergoing spinal surgery and the physical complications that resulted from it in 2018.
"I had spinal operation." He said he had a benign tumor on his spine, but that the surgery "ruined my walking".
Fox noted that he had begun to break bones. He fractured an arm, elbow, hand, and face.
Fox responded that Parkinson's is "a killer" when asked by Pauley if injuries were caused by "falling."
"It is falling, aspirating food, and getting pneumonia." He explained that there are many subtle ways to get you.
He added, "You don't die from Parkinson's. You die from Parkinson's. I have been thinking a lot about its mortality. ... I won't be 80. I'm never going to be 80.
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), Parkinson's is a brain disease that causes "unintentional or uncontrollable movement, such as stiffness and balance problems."
Fox was diagnosed in 1991 at the age of 29 with Parkinson's disease. He was one of first celebrities to publicly discuss his illness. Michael J. Fox Foundation -- he even founded his own foundation. In 2000, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Its mission is to develop improved therapies for people living with Parkinson's and to research a cure.
Fox has always been honest about his disease. He explained that he can be wheelchair-bound at times, but that he can also regain mobility. He said that while it is difficult at times, he would not change anything. He always looks for "something for which to be thankful."
"Parkinson’s is a gift that never stops giving." Fox said at the New York Comic-Con, "But it's a blessing and I wouldn’t trade it for anything." "People like Chris Lloyd [the 'Back to the Future co-star] and many of you were there for me a lot. It's not what I have; it's what I've received, the voice that can help me get this done and help others."
Fox will be interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning this Sunday.
