Minnesota Man Confessed to Using Moose Antler to Murder Sex Offender: Cops

Police claim Levi Axtell believed Lawrence Scully, a 77 year-old man who was accused of the sexual assault on a 6-year old girl in 1979, was trying to "groom his daughter."

After police allege that he beat a Minnesota man with a shovel, he then "finished him off with a moose horn," a Minnesota man was arrested and is now being charged with second-degree murder.

Levi Axtell (28), reportedly surrendered to police on Wednesday after he was accused of murdering Lawrence Scully, 77, in Grand Marais, Minnesota. He was arrested for murder and released on bail of one million dollars.

According to Star Tribune court documents, police received a 9-1-1 phone call from someone who saw a minivan pulling up to Scully’s house. Then, he heard screaming and saw the van driving off. Axtell, who was "covered in blood" when he arrived at the Cook County Sheriff's Office, demanded to be handcuffed. Axtell told authorities that he had hit Scully with his shovel from the man’s porch 15 times, before "finishing him off" using a large moose horn.

Later, Scully was found dead at his home by deputies due to the serious nature his head injuries.

According to police, Axtell told them that he believed Scully had "sexually offended children in the past" as well as "believed he would reoffend." According to the outlet, Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen confirmed that Scully had been convicted of sexually assaulting a 6-year old girl in 1979. He was released from prison in 1982.

Axtell had previously applied for a protection order from Scully in 2018. He claimed that Scully was "stalking kids in his van" as well as writing, "him speaking and trying to groom my daughter is totally inappropriate and must stop." The order was granted temporarily, but was later withdrawn. Eliasen stated that although there were some allegations against Scully's character, the recent investigations had not revealed anything and were mostly focused on harassment.

Axtell also posted on Facebook, allegedly saying that the only cure for pedophiles was "a bullet". He added, "People always question me why I hate them." They assume that I have been abused. However, I believe being protective is an Axtell trait."

He was arraigned via Zoom last Wednesday and is currently being held by Cook County Sheriff until his next court appearance, April 10.

Levi's family claimed that they had set up a GoFundMe account to help raise money for Levi's daughter. However, the site shut it down, presumably because Levi was planning on using the funds for his legal defense.

"The Axtell Family is grateful for the support from their small community, Cook County, Minnesota as well as those nationwide who have heard their story and offered support and solidarity," they wrote on a website for donations.
