Mom of Missing Madalina Cojocari Discussed Theory Father May Have Given 'Girl Away for Money'

Documents that were not released suggest Madalina, who had been reported missing since November, was seen with a member of her family after being reported missing. Her mother could have lied to the police about when she last saw Madalina.

Seven months after Madalina Cojocari, 11, was reported missing by parents, details have emerged about the alleged activities of the two men in the days following the presumed disappearance of the girl and their arrest.

The FBI, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and Cornelius Police Department began investigating Cojocari’s disappearance in December. Diana Cojocari didn't notify school officials about the missing girl until December 15, nearly a full month after she and her stepfather Christopher Palmiter had told authorities that they last seen her on November 23,.

They were both arrested on December 17 and charged with Failure to Report a Disappearance to Law Enforcement. Indictments were issued in January. Although authorities have searched extensively for the child, they have not found many leads. However, investigators stated in a search warrant that was unsealed in the early part of this year in which one of Diana’s relatives said she wanted to "smuggle" herself and her child out of their home because the couple had a "bad marriage".

Other documents recently unsealed by WBTV revealed that investigators examined surveillance photos taken on December 16, in Sugar Mountain, the day after Madalina's parents reported her missing.

According to the warrant the photos show a girl, a boy who was "physically compatible" with her and a man that is reported to be the only blood relative of the child in the United States.

Documents suggest Diana could have seen the missing child between when her parents said they last saw Diana in November, and the time she was reported as missing. Two days before she claimed she was traveling to North Carolina in search of her daughter, a text message dated December 2 "indicated that she was present with the missing child."

Diana and her mother were recorded talking in jail. Diana allegedly discussed "a theory" that Chris had given the girl to Chris for money, and she also talked about a large bag of cash and withdrawing money. Palmiter was , allegedly, heard on a recorded jail call, talking to his sister and brother-in-law, saying Diana had "a lot of money with her." He added that he did not know where the cash came from.

The documents also included an alleged message sent by Palmiter via Facebook to a member of his family, which read: "we are doing some sort of investigation. Madi is missing, and the local police took all our electronic devices. Luckily, I have an older phone. Although they didn't take my personal computer, probably because they overlooked it. Diana is now using it to call her parents."

In the records, it was also revealed that police deliberately placed Palmiter in jail with an informant and seized his notebooks.

The search continues for Madalina. She is described as a 90-pound white female. Last seen in jeans, pink Adidas shoes with purple and white accents, a white jacket and a white T-shirt.

Call the Cornelius Police Department on 704-892-773 or 1-800-Call FBI if you have any information.
