According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 200,000 pounds of pepperoni and cooked ham products were recalled because they may contain listeria.
Some products may contain harmful bacteria
Alexander & Hornung, a company under Perdue Premium Meat Company, Inc., issued a recall after being informed by health officials that product sampling had reported positive results for listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria is a bacteria that can cause infection in humans and other warm-blooded mammals through food contaminated with L. monocytogenes. The FSIS states that food contaminated by L. monocytogenes may cause listeria, which is a serious infection that affects approximately 1,600 Americans annually and kills around 260.
Listeriais symptoms include fever, stiff neck, headaches, stiff neck, stiffness, convulsions, confusion, loss-of-balance, and muscle aches. This can also be accompanied by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Antibiotics can be used to treat the infection. Although it may not seem like a serious problem, listeria can cause fatal and severe infections in elderly people and those with compromised immune systems.
There are no confirmed reports of sickness, but consumers still need to throw away products
The recall affects 17 products, each of which were produced at different dates and shipped to retailers across the country. Some of the affected meats may still be in your freezer or fridge because they were manufactured over a period of time.
The establishment number "EST" is used to identify the recall products. The USDA mark of inspection shows M10125. Alexander & Hornung and Big Y, Butcher Boy, Five Star Food Club, Garrrett Valley Farms. Niman Ranch, Open Nature, Wellshire Wood are just a few of the many meat brands that have been recalled. You can find a complete list of all the recall products here.
"We are committed in producing the highest quality product. Therefore, out of an abundance caution, we have decided that we will recall a limited number of further processed items," Gary Malenke (senior vice president of plant operations at Alexander & Hornung) said.
Consumers have not reported any sickness, but the company advises that the products be thrown out or returned to their place of purchase. For any questions, consumers can call (866-866-3703 Monday to Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. EST.
