Two weeks after the wife was allegedly murdered-suicide, she filed for divorce.
Police say that the patriarch of Mormon Enoch, Utah has killed his wife, five children, and mother-in law.
After Tausha had missed her appointment earlier in the morning, police responded to a welfare call "from concerned relatives and friends" to find the family of eight dead inside their home. Her husband Tausha and Michael Haight were both killed in the shooting. Gail, 78 and five of their children, including three girls aged 17, 12, and 7, and two boys, were also among those who died.
Rob Dotson, the city manager, stated that evidence suggests that Michael took his own life after killing seven other people in the house.

According to court records and authorities (via AP), Tausha had filed for divorce on December 21, 2022. Michael was served with the summons on December 27, but the motives for the divorce are not known and Mayor Geoffrey Chesnut stated that they were not certain if the murders were motivated by the divorce. The lawyer representing her in the divorce case said that she had not expressed fear of physical violence from her husband.
Chesnut was very emotional at Thursday's press conference, saying, "It is not too often that something like this hits pretty close home."
He said that the Haights were actually my neighbors. His youngest sons played in my yard alongside my sons. "Enoch City is a very close community... This is a tremendous loss to many, many families that have spent many, many nights together with these individuals who are now gone."
He claimed that Tausha and one the daughters had been seen at church the night before the murders. The family belonged to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Both the AP as well as local news reported that they were. Chesnut said that Tausha's mother was at the home to "provide support through the difficulties they were facing."
Authorities claimed they had previously investigated the man's family, "a few years ago," but did not elaborate.
Dotson concluded, "We don’t know why it happened." "No one will likely know what was going on in the minds of these people. We do know they were our friends and neighbors, and we love them."
On Thursday, the White House released a statement saying that President Joe Biden, and his wife Jill, were "mourning for the Enoch City community, Utah in the wake of tragic shooting that has reportedly claimed five children's lives and many adults in their family home."
The statement said that too many Americans have lost loved one or had their lives forever altered by gun violence. Gun violence is still the leading cause for death among children in America. "Five more children were killed in another shooting at Enoch City less than a month after the Sandy Hook tragedy.
