The new Barbie doll honors an Old Hollywood icon, Anna May Wong.
Mattel has created a Barbie to honor Chinese American actress Anna May Wong. The doll is part of Mattel's Inspiring Women collection and was created to honor Asian American Heritage Month.
The Barbie is sold out and depicts Wong wearing an outfit similar to the one she wore for her iconic 1934 film, "Limehouse Blues."
The doll's description states that Anna May Wong was the first Chinese American Hollywood film star. "Frustrated by being stereotyped in stereotypical roles she founded her production company in the year 1924. She continued to break barriers throughout her career." This collectible Barbie doll, dressed in a red gown featuring a golden dragon pattern, pays tribute to a trailblazing woman.
Anna Wong, Wong's niece worked with Mattel closely to ensure that the doll captured Wong's iconic appearance.
"I didn't hesitate at all." Wong told AP via email that it was an incredible honor. I wanted to be sure that they captured her facial features and clothes correctly. "And they did!"
According to Mattel's website, the Inspiring Women Series "pays homage to amazing heroines from their time." Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall and Maya Angelou are also among the women who have been honored.
Mattel has created these new dolls as part of its effort to create dolls that are more inclusive and represent people from all backgrounds. Mattel launched a Barbie doll that features a girl who has Down syndrome in the latest campaign.
Lisa McKnight is the Mattel Executive Vice President and global head of Barbie and Dolls. She said: "Our goal to allow all children to see themselves as Barbie while also encouraging them to play with dolls that do not look exactly like themselves."
