After she was called by one of her viewers, a St. Louis news anchor received an angry call. The internet rallied around her. Michelle Li was a part of a New Years Day broadcast in which she reported on the food choices of people around the globe.
Holiday Tradition
Some people eat green vegetables to increase their wealth, while others eat black-eyed beans for luck. Li revealed that she had eaten dumpling soup and said, "That's how a lot Korean people do." Li received lots of positive feedback from viewers, who enjoyed seeing someone who was familiar with their traditions. One woman, however, took offense at Li's comments and called KSDK in St. Louis.
The caller stated, "Hi, your Asian anchor mentioned something this evening about being Asian, which is why Asian people eat dumplings every New Year's Day." "And I kinda take offense to that because what would happen if one your white anchors said, "Well white people eat these on New Year's Day."
The caller said, "She can keep her Korean private," "Alright, sorry. It was irritating. It was because if a white person said that, they would be fired. Also, tell us about the food that white people eat. Okay, thank you.
Li uploaded a clip of herself listening on social media to the message. The clip quickly became viral. Everybody, from politicians to authors to social media influencers, shared their experiences with holiday traditions and the racism they encountered.
Other People Share Their Experiences
HsiaoChing Chou, a cookbook author tweeted: "20 years ago, the publisher of my paper received a letter from a reader criticizing my article about tea. They called me a fortune cookie and said they should have hired an American." This is just the beginning.
Michelle Wu, Boston's mayor, shared that her family also ate dumplings to mark the new year. Others shared their stories using the hashtag #VeryAsian.
Li said in a personal article she wrote for KSDK that "What she said turned into a gift." It has been a joy to see so many people sharing their stories and family photos on social media. There are more good things than bad.
Li said, "We are all just humans trying to exist." "If I had the opportunity to speak with this woman, I would be delighted to have a deep and meaningful conversation with her -- perhaps we could have it over a bowl full of dumplings. There are many great options in St. Louis.
