Cast and creators of Jennifer Lawrence’s raunchy comedic film "No Hard Feelings", which stars Andrew Barth Feldman, weigh in on the controversy surrounding helicopter parents who hired someone to date their teenage son and criticizing Lawrence’s age gap with her co-star.
Jennifer Lawrence’s full on comedy film debut "No Hard Feelings" has now been released in theaters. Its cast and creators have weighed in with some complaints about the icky premise of the movie, including its pretty blatant dual-standard.
The age difference between Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman is one of the critics. Lawrence, 32, plays opposite Andrew Barth Feldman (21), who is playing slightly younger, at 19 years old.
Have you seen "The Graduate"? Natalie Morales, Lawrence's co-star, told The Hollywood Reporter that Lawrence was "supposed" to be playing a woman older than her.
She continues to say, "There are many films and TV shows where the male leads is older than the female leads, and no one bats an eyebrow." What's the difference?"
Gene Stupnitsky, a writer and director, agrees. He notes that the 15-year difference in age between Lawrence and her co-star Bradley Cooper was not noticed. He noted that the opposite is also true.
The trailer makes it clear that Lawrence's character is asking the question, and what the parents mean by "date".
Laura Benanti , the wife of Matthew Broderick 's father, looks on. Lawrence also agrees: "I will date his brains to the bone."
This satire is based on the idea that it is a bit creepy and goes beyond any parental boundaries. The outrage hasn't ceased.
She told THR that the film was a satirical view of what happens when you don't give your kids more freedom to make their own decisions. You'll end up curating your child's life forever if you don’t.
"I suppose what happens when a child goes to school is that it's so terrifying that they'll find friends, be happy and take care of themselves. Some parents will go to any extent to make this transition work. It's hard. Broderick said, "I've been there." You have to let the children make their own decisions. "But these parents mess with nature."
The film's producer, Naomi Odenkirk said that the Craigslist advertisement which inspired the storyline was "parents overstepping their boundaries, for sure."
Marc Provissiero, a fellow producer, added: "It is not so far from actual parenting decisions." You want to give your child the best care possible. "Where's the line?"
Stupnitsky challenges those who are outraged by the movie's premise to step out of their anger and watch the film. He told THR that he would be surprised if people felt the same way after watching the film.
He continued, "We took pains to avoid the ick factor as it could have gone that way." "We took a very humanist approach, and that is all I can ask."
This story teaches us to let our children find their own path. And maybe not judge a movie by its trailer. Comedy is difficult.
