Ohio Child Discovers a Sewing Needle in Trick-or-Treat Candy

Police offer to X-ray Halloween hauls for children.

After sewing needles were discovered inside Halloween candy, Ohio police are reminding parents to inspect their children's Halloween candy.

"Why would anyone do that?" These types of things are not uncommon, but it is quite disturbing to see someone actually do this in our own community. Fostoria PD posted the following in a Facebook message.

Police added that a child who was observant reported finding the sewing needle after Trick-or-Treating in Fostoria's N. Union, Summit and Rock Streets in Fostoria last evening, had located it.

Officers shared a photograph of a mini KitKat. The silver tip of the sharp needle is just barely visible at the wrapper's end. The second photo showed the chocolate bar being dissected to reveal the place where the needle was inserted.

Chief Keith Loreno stated that even though we are only aware of two pieces of candy involved, the chief takes this serious and is appalled at anyone who would want to harm children in the community.

Police claimed that both the tainted candy had sewing needles inside. They have not been able to find out where they came from.

A local hospital offered to scan Trick-or-Treat bags of children to find any additional hidden metal. Police advised parents to contact ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital for help. There, staff could scan candy with a portable machine.

Although the many reports of Halloween candy tainted over the years have been disproved as urban legends, it appears can still happen in isolated instances.

Authorities have recently warned that children are being handed cannabis candy packets to their children, either accidentally or not. These candies come in brightly-colored packages, making it difficult for them to distinguish from regular candies.
